The HP-UX built in command fbackup is free and does what you need. you can configure your backup schedule with SAM, as well as your backup scope.

OMNIBACK is meant to be more of a network backup solution than a single seat solution. The price reflects the capabilities.

After reviewing Veritas, Tivoli, and Omniback, were using Omniback. This is for sites as small as 12 to as large as 80.

Regards,
Shannon

I have an HP9000 D220 running HP-UX 10.20. I need backup software that will let me schedule daily backups with the capability to append backups to tapes, so that the previous backup on the tape isn't overwritten. Does Omniback II do this, and has it been replaced by Openview Storage Data Protector?
Thanks...
Are you planning on placing any backups off-site?

I could never reccommend anyone appending backups from one day to the next.

What kind of tape drive do you have and how much storage are you backing up?

Is there a database involved?

live free or die
harry

Hello,

OmniBack will do what you are looking for. The current version of OmniBack is 4.1. I think the next version will be called Data Protector.

JP
Hi

Data Protector is a new product name for OmniBack, not a new product. In fact, it is a new version of OmniBack (5.0). The problem in your case with Data Protector is that the Cell Server need to be a least HP-UX 11.0 (but 10.2 clients can be backed up). OmniBack 4.1 is fully supported on HP-UX 10.2, I think it is still avilable.

OmniBack does give you the capability to append backups and I really like OmniBack. However, a D220 probably does not have much data on it and OmniBack is expensive.

What are you backing up? You may be able to just use tar, dump or some other low level utility and the no rewind tape device.

If you are looking for greater backup capabilities - catalogs, scheduling, media management... - you should look for a package. You need to better define your requirements.
