How to add a new hdd subsystem?

could someone please explain how to add a new hdd subsystem?
I got it, and now I need to add it, and to partition it ...

Hello,

You need to tell us part of what will your harddisk be.

Is it a harddisk in a server? Is it a harddisk for a disk array?

Hello Thorsten,

please give us more information:
- what subsystem ist it (type, scsi-interface etc.)
- what system do you want to connect (Server type, HP-UX version)
- how many disks and their type
- last but not least: how do you want to use the disks (how many filesystems, filesystem types, mirroring etc)

Hi,

sorry for giving less information!!!

We have an HP9000-A180C system, which currelty has 2 external harddisks.
Its terminated by an active terminator.

Now we got two more external harddisks, and the whole installation looks like this:
A180C - hdd1 - hdd2 - terminator
and it should look like this:
A180C - hdd1 - hdd2 - hdd3 - hdd4 - terminator

hdd1: scsi id1
hdd2: scsi id2
hdd3: scsi id3
hdd4: scsi id4

I guess I just have to remove the terminator from disk2, and plug it to disk4.

Is that right?
Or what does I have also to do?

Plus this information:

The currently used ones are:
Seagate ST39173WD

and the new ones are:
Seagate Cheetah 36ES (ST318406LC)

SAM gives me the following for disk1:
Hardware Path: 8/4.2.0
Number of Path: 1
Use: LVM
Volume Group widediff
Total Mbytes: 8683
Description: Seagate ST399173WD

SAM gives me the following for disk2:
Hardware Path: 8/4.3.0
Number of Path: 1
Use: LVM
Volume Group widediff
Total Mbytes: 8683
Description: Seagate ST399173WD

Partition type: I have no real idea
Partition size: we need several partition of 2GB max., due to some informix limitations.

Sorry, I'm not a *nix guy .... so I have no real idea which data is needed ...

Hello,

If you chain the harddisks like you said, in theory that should work. But pay attention, since having a lot of harddisks in a single chain can make a lot of bottlenecks on the chain.

Also, harddisks have high SCSI IDs by default, like 6 for example. The preferred SCSI IDs should be 6, 5, 4, 3; not 1, 2, 3, 4; like Microsoft do. In UNIX, 7 is the highest priority ID, whereas, correct me if I'm wrong, in Windows it's 1.

so in theory it should work .. ;-)

But what does I have to do within SAM?
Whcih steps are neccessary?
I'd like to set those two new disks as a mirror (if possible!).
