Hi John

I know how to set up a remote printer locally, but why should I do that, when I have an automated distribution of a script, that will alway point to our "default" printer, which can change form time to time?

Regards

Bjarne

Hi

When trying to print on an existing remote printer (works from other sites) from a HP-UX 11i machine, I get the above answere - what can be wrong.

PS I've had a look at DocId: UPRTKBRC00008900, which explains exactly how I see it, but the directory /var/opt/pd/pdcclientd does not exist.

The exact command I,m trying with is: echo Test | lp -dcphvfw01.net.sas.dk:cphprt0240.

Regards

Bjarne Dein
Scandinavian IT

Did you configure the remote printer to your system? While doing this, you can specify the printer location/destination there (remote_hostname:printer_name). Then you can specify the printer_name directly with the lp command and -d:
# lp -dprinter_name file_name

No - and this is about the case - I don't want to add any, I only want to print direct remote on an existing one, like I do on other systems.
But thanks for the advice!

Regards

Bjarne

Hi,

I don't think you can print to that printer using the method you are trying. The way that the lp machinery knows about the remote printer is by setting up that printer as a remote printer on the HP box. You might be able to redirect something to a particular port on the printer, but why bother with all that when 'lp' takes care of all that for you?

It's pretty simple to setup the remote printer. Even just for a temporary job it only takes a minute or two to get going, and you can delete it when you are done if you don't want it permanently.

JP
