Dan (or Cheryl in this case),

My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/ update - there are numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical because much of it has been lost.

2) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

3) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the same links to the notification pages.

4) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

5) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones are.

6) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can be understood.

7) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

8) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

9) A new hat for the 50,000 point level.

Pete
Hey guys.............
I'd like to see my total points on the title screen when I login, and not have to go to the "all members" page to see if anyone has assigned to me points recently.

And as for which "hat" to assign people with huge numbers of points, I suggest Dust Puppy for 50,000 and Erwin for 100,000 [people not familiar with these can check the archives http://www.userfriendly.org]. The author, Illiad, will probably license the images for very little or nothing--he's broke.

Chris

Hi Cheryl and Dan,

I would like to 'pile on' regarding Pete's (4) point - inadequate HP Forum search utility.

I don't know if anyone saw '60 Minutes' last week. They ran a long segment which focussed on google. This company does one thing very well - SEARCH.

Because HP obviously has other (more pressing) priorities, I suggest HP simply PAY google to fix the HP Forum search problem.

Am I being too simplistic?

Thanks for listening to my rant.

:-) Jay

Hi Cheryl and Dan,

I think I've already read some posts about the search engine. Anyway, the search definitively doesn't work well with the option "all words":

I was searching for threads with "sshd[" and "syslog" words and the search engine tells me:

"Your search for " sshd[ syslog " produced no results! "

But, after serching with just "sshd[", I found this thread with also the "syslog" word in it:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=716493758+1104927994561+28353475&threadId=267234

Are you people using one of those funny databases that crashes with more than 20Gb?? :)

Kindest Regards,

Eric Antunes

Cheryl / Dan,

Enhancement Request (Pete could you possibly add this to your monthly list?) ---

Allow a thread to be closed without it being moved to the top of the list. A person closed several threads today, some from 2001, and it really cluttered the top of the HP-UX forum.

With threads this old, we really should be able to close them without moving them up in the list.

I would close a bunch of my old ones, but I don't want to clutter things up that much.

I agree with Patrick. Although, as I have said in the past, is it really necessary to close old threads? I can understand it in the case of congratulations threads that somehow become re-activated after two years, but I have lots of old threads open that I don't intend touching.

Mark Syder (like the drink but spelt different)

Patrick,

I've been contemplating what position I want to take concerning thread closure, since I'm actually against it in the first place, but your request quite nicely avoids the pro's and con's of the practice itself, so I think I can reasonably accomodate you without compromising my principles.
OK, I agree with everybody!!!!

I agree with Patrick that they should be closed without floating to the top (.... floats, you know).

I agree with Mark that there doesn't seem to be much point in closing old, inactive threads. If someone wants to jump onto an old congrats thread of mine, I'll be more then happy to give them zero points for their efforts.

I agree with Steve that there should not be an ability to place a bunny on a thread without actually assigning a bunny to one of the responses (at least that's the way I interpreted his wording).

I'll see if I can work all that into next month's issues in a coherent form.

Pete

Hi,

Carry over from previous thread.

On the main page ( http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/home.do?forumId=1 ), there's a link for posting or reading forum successes. It points to the closed august 2004 thread.

New one though, Procura did his wonderful job again this month with the January stats. I don't think it was intentional that he called it the "Januari" stats though.

Happy new years all! Hopefully we'll just get bigger and better again this year!
