Geoff,

<QUOTE>
"is that not VERY *UX-centric?"

this is a HP forum after all...
</QUOTE>

Yes, indeed, this _IS_ an HP forum.

But HP _does_ do some more than just HPUX.
And although Tru64 & Linux are pretty much *UX as well, they do _even more_ stuff!

<QUOTE>
- how do you install software?
</QUOTE>

Usually, by
-preventing users of that app for one node,
-defining a session trace for a session on that node,
-enabling the needed privs (usually SYSPRV will do, regularly also CMKRNL),
-depending on packaging, either run PRODUCT INSTALL or execute VMSINSTAL,
-enable tis node for applic manager on test data
-if approved, prevent new user sessions on old software version, and allow on new.

SOME products require a special installation account. Oracle has a habit of defining version-specific accounts, some others specifically require "SYSTEM"

<QUOTE>
- how do you create users?
</QUOTE>

On smaller sites, by enabling SYSPRV and running AUTHORIZE

At me current assignment, (on avarage 250+ user mutations per day) we have an automated batch running daily, using the personnel system changes as input.
Application granting & revoking (150+ /day) is decentralised to departmental officers who are restricted to just granting to and revoking from established users within their department.
Incidental exceptions (1 or 2 a week) are
done by system management (see above)

<QUOTE>
- how do you create file systems?
<QUOTE></QUOTE>

I do not really have that concept. If you mean: specifying various data areas for users or applics and allocating diskspace to that, then, that is integrated into the installation procedures and in the setting up of user environments

<QUOTE>
I can't think of one reason why I wouldn't want to be root
</QUOTE>

Well, I guess you have to: in Unix you are either "Mr nobody", or you are "God of the machine". There exist more granular approaches. Just some very simplified examples: "OPER" priv allows/is required for various operator functions, but give no more-than-standard access to the file system or memory.
"SYSPRV" a.o. gives a lot (but not all) access to the file system, but NOT to memory.
"BYPASS" gives FULL control over the file system, "CMEXEC" gives access to the outer layers of the running operating system workings, "CMKRNL" gives full control over it. There are alltogether 35 different, independant privs...

<QUOTE>
Managers should never have root access - as they don't need to configure the system - if they want root - get them their own box...
</QUOTE>

I could not agree more! I stlli feel that pain, because I _HAVE BEEN_ in that situation.
And he was the man that evaluated me functioning, upon which was based my paycheck and the continuity of my assignment!

I guess by now it must have become clear that I am a VMS man (or OpenVMS, as Marketing requires it be named).

Wow, must be friday afternoon to make so much fuzz about it.

Really the only point is: This is a HP forum, and that extends to more than just Unix. That should imply that the Unix way is not necessarily the only way. (I even forgot to mention the M$ parts, or printers, or Imaging, but those are all also part of this forum).

Time to travel home, and get some good beer.

While not in person, please join me in thought!

Proost.

Have one on me.

Jan
</QUOTE>

Dan (or Cheryl in this case),

My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/ update - there are numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical because much of it has been lost.

2) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

3) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the same links to the notification pages.

4) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

5) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones are.

6) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can be understood.

7) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

8) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

9) A new hat for the 50,000 point level.

Pete
Hi Cheryl and Dan,

I would like to 'pile on' regarding Pete's (4) point - inadequate HP Forum search utility.

I don't know if anyone saw '60 Minutes' last week. They ran a long segment which focussed on google. This company does one thing very well - SEARCH.

Because HP obviously has other (more pressing) priorities, I suggest HP simply PAY google to fix the HP Forum search problem.

Am I being too simplistic?

Thanks for listening to my rant.

:-) Jay

Hi Cheryl and Dan,

I think I've already read some posts about the search engine. Anyway, the search definitively doesn't work well with the option "all words":

I was searching for threads with "sshd[" and "syslog" words and the search engine tells me:

"Your search for " sshd[ syslog " produced no results! "

But, after serching with just "sshd[", I found this thread with also the "syslog" word in it:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=716493758+1104927994561+28353475&threadId=267234

Are you people using one of those funny databases that crashes with more than 20Gb?? :)

Kindest Regards,

Eric Antunes

Cheryl / Dan,

Enhancement Request (Pete could you possibly add this to your monthly list?) ---

Allow a thread to be closed without it being moved to the top of the list. A person closed several threads today, some from 2001, and it really cluttered the top of the HP-UX forum.

With threads this old, we really should be able to close them without moving them up in the list.

I would close a bunch of my old ones, but I don't want to clutter things up that much.

I agree with Patrick. Although, as I have said in the past, is it really necessary to close old threads? I can understand it in the case of congratulations threads that somehow become re-activated after two years, but I have lots of old threads open that I don't intend touching.

Mark Syder (like the drink but spelt different)

Patrick,

I've been contemplating what position I want to take concerning thread closure, since I'm actually against it in the first place, but your request quite nicely avoids the pro's and con's of the practice itself, so I think I can reasonably accomodate you without compromising my principles.
A request that I'd like added to Pete's list, but will make whether or not he agrees. ;-)

No bunny display on closed threads without actually bunnified point assignment.

I purposely worded this request contrary to normal linguistic issues.

SEP

OK, I agree with everybody!!!!

I agree with Patrick that they should be closed without floating to the top (.... floats, you know).

I agree with Mark that there doesn't seem to be much point in closing old, inactive threads. If someone wants to jump onto an old congrats thread of mine, I'll be more then happy to give them zero points for their efforts.

I agree with Steve that there should not be an ability to place a bunny on a thread without actually assigning a bunny to one of the responses (at least that's the way I interpreted his wording).

I'll see if I can work all that into next month's issues in a coherent form.

Pete

I know that the "don't bubble closed threads to the top" is on the chalkboard as is rethinking the closing/points/bunny issue.

Thanks to you all for the good feedback.

Hi,

Carry over from previous thread.

On the main page ( http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/home.do?forumId=1 ), there's a link for posting or reading forum successes. It points to the closed august 2004 thread.

New one though, Procura did his wonderful job again this month with the January stats. I don't think it was intentional that he called it the "Januari" stats though.

Happy new years all! Hopefully we'll just get bigger and better again this year!
