frecover errors!

When using frecover -r -v -f $TAPE_DEV to verify the contents of a DDS tape, it read back files for 20 minutes, then stopped giving the following error:

frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)
frecover(2114): read error from input device (I/O error)
frecover(2113): unable to resync backup media

Does this mean the tape is trashed? Is there anything else I can do to check this?
