Hi all,

I am just about to try and attempt an installation of HP UX 11.00 into a 712/100 that only has a 1GB hard drive.

I have been told that this will cause problems as the recommended minimum for HP UX 11.00 is 2GB on a 712/100 machine.

Does this mean it is impossible to squeeze essential only OS content onto a 1 GB disk?
Has this been done? and am I waisting my time trying?

thanks guru's

John

Hi,

i think it shoulkd work, check out:

Q: What are the RAM and disk requirements of 11.x?
A: 11.00 32-bit and 64-bit can boot with as little as 64MB RAM and 1GB disk, but the performance would be very slow. Here are the recommended minimums:
11.00 32-bit: 128MB RAM, 1-2GB disk
11.00 64-bit: 512MB RAM, 2-3GB disk
The 11.00 64-bit system doesn't require twice the disk space of an 11.00 32-bit system. The size of the 64-bit executable has been optimized since 10.x and has shown modest growth.

As mentioned earlier, the full benefits of 64-bit computing will not be realized until a system has more than 4GB RAM and large amounts of swap space (4GB and higher). This is the first step in exploiting the large memory address space that 64-bit provides.

its from:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/os/osfaq.html#General

Hope this will help,

Gideon

Hi

From the HP-UX 11.0 install guide it is clear that this server is supported, but that for support you need a 2G disk.

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5971-0642/5971-0642.html

You may have a problem if you try to install the patch bundles, so choose Basic configuration during install, as other options can install the bundles of patches included on the install media.

Bare minimum might fit on a 1G drive, but I find that hard to believe.

I have it running on a 4G drive and have a few extras like Apache, Perl, and have about 1G left to play with.

If it installs on a 1G, you will not have any room left for any products, and a very minimal install.

HP-UX 11.0 should fit OK on a 1Gb drive if you remove all Xwindows and online diagnostics from the installation. And note that while you need to add several dozen patches, there probably isn't enough room to actually install the patches, even if they come from a CD or over the network.

You'll need to get another disk to install 11.0 and do anything useful on your system. 1Gb is too small for a 10.20 workstation too so it isn't unique to 11.0. It will be very hard to find a 2Gb or 4Gb disk (perhaps from a used computer parts store). Make sure it is single ended SCSI-2. Newer disks are not always backward compatible.
