Hi everyone!
I'm usually an Windows NT guy but finally I got my hands on a unix box with HP-UX 11 on. Since I have a java app that relies on a java class lib that seems to need a screen to run. It not that fun to have a NT machine attached to our cluster just to have these java processes tunning....
I got some hints to use xvfb - virtual frame buffer to simulate a screen on the server. Where do I find that one? Distributed with HP?And how to use it? or are the anything else around to solve this?

xvbf : is not officially supported by HP, however it does run on both 10.20 & 11.xx O/S's

If you need a pre-compiled binary post your email and I can provide it, otherwise use the web to locate the source etc etc .

On it's way ... as to problems with install ? :

fine on 10.20, may have to force it on 11.xx as it's a 10.20 binary. However it works fine on 11.xx in the UKRC. Good luck.

Try the following FTP site:

Address: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
userid: xgraphic
password: xgraphic
Filename: 11.00/Xvfb-11.depot.gz

This is an (unsupported) installable SD depot. You will need to look at the /etc/rc.config.d/xvfb config script, and make sure it doesn't conflict with any other Xservers on the system (ie, if you have an X Print Server running, or if you have a local X display running, you will need to make some changes). Also, you will need to make sure the RUN_X_FONT_SERVER is set to "1" in /etc/rc.config.d/xfs.

I hope this helps :)

I have installed the xvfb utility with PHSS_23546. I have been successful in getting it to launch but I am receiving an error once I execute an application which requires a display (using x3d display driver).

The application which I am launching is reporting the below problem.

X connection to ancho:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
X connection to ancho:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Any suggestions on what is happening and how to fix it?

"using x3d display driver" could you explain this ?

So you are running xvfb on a hpux system without a graphics head, what DISPLAY identifier did you configure xvfb to use ie hostname:5 , 10 etc ?

in the terminal window you are running the application from echo $DISPLAY returns ? or where and how are you kicking off your applcation and have you set the DISPLAY variable to match that of xvfb ?

Other than that could this be linked to hostname resolution ie <>
does xclock -display <HOSTNAME>:# work ? where # is the screen identifier you configured xvfb to start on.

any further clues in /var/X11/Xserver/logs/* ?

ps it might be better to start a fresh post in future !</HOSTNAME>
