Hello Dan,

login today was pretty smooth (ok, I have got the
cookies set before), but the pages came in slowly,
no 404 or SSI error for me, though!

Even "reply" after "search" is working :-)

But, oh, this page itself just did NOT reload - only the
header line appeared ("hp home...how to buy" from the
AMERICAS/ASIS PACIFIC server).

I do like Andrew's idea and I second Ramesh about the
"follow moved postings to the new place - not the forum"
to really link to the moved item itself. And the monospace
option that Kim turned up would be really helpful, well.
AFTER we have got a wider "reply to message" box ;-)
And a higher one, too, please.

Oh, why are leading space stripped off the replies?
Sometimes I would really love to use them to make
the reading a little easier (actually, I DID use those
leading space a lot, until I noticed and gave up).

Thanks,
Wodisch

Dan,
Just a clarification on my request of posting a question with multiple categories. I wasn't clear enough, but yes, if this is done, it should be done without multiple threads. So basically, one question or thread, with the potenital to list it in multiple categories. I realize that this would probably be a major change, so it may not be worth it.

Dan,

I can see Bernie's point of wanting a question linked to more than 1 area like the hp-ux family and the hardware->hp9000 area, but I think that will open up a can of worms that you really don't want.

Some problems I can see: How do you do the link between categories? If it is linked between categories, how do points that are assigned get stored? Which category are they stored in?

I think a better thing to do would be to move the hardware areas under the OS area, or move the OS area under the hardware, so that you have something like>

Forums > hp-ux and under hp-ux you have hp9000 servers, hp9000 workstations, general, sys admin, ignite, etc.

or

Forums > HP9000 (hp-ux) and under hp9000 you have server hardware, workstation hardware, general, sys admin, ignite, etc.

You could do the same thing for MPE/iX and the 3000s , WinNT and the PC Platforms and Linux and the PC Platforms.

Then you could have the hardware questions for each area come up on the family page with the OS questions.

Hope that makes sense.

Just my $0.02

Dan,

We currently have a 'rabbit out of the hat', where 8 or more points get assigned to an answer within a thread - showing the 'question status'...

This provides a good way of scanning through a forum, to see which answers havn't been 'solved'.

I would like to propose another 'question status' icon : I would like to be able to distinguish between threads where the author is assigning points of any amount... This will allow me to see that my possible contribution to a thread will most likely be rewarded.

The HPUX forum is generally pretty good with points getting assigned, but the Management Software forum is terrible... rarely do points get assigned. (This tells me that Sys Admins are thorough, and understand how communities work, whereas application people don't !)

Perhaps a small icon showing that points have been assigned to at least one of the answers within the thread...

What do you all think ??

Andrew

I like Patrick's suggestion. It makes a lot of sense. It would probably give the hardware issues more attention too as it makes it easier for us to monitor all HP issues (for example).
Also, another idea along the lines of Andrew's suggestion, is to add an icon for Author, which would designate whether the Author assigns points or not. Maybe if the author assigns points to 75% of his questions he gets an icon designating that. I think that could go a long way in encouraging others to make sure they assign points to their questions.
I don't think the percentage of questions points are assigned to reflects much.
I have some questions unassigned, mainly because I got no answer or posted up the solution myself. I think a search for questions that you posted with no points assigned, or similar on your login would be a better way.. ie change the mechanism that a user finds out he has and where he has assigned points to.

PS: is there going to be a tru64 forum opening up soon??

Later,
Bill

Andrew, Bernie and Bill,

Great thoughts on how to encourage points assigning. The icon idea is interesting -- I'd like to hear from others about it. As Bill points out, a first time poster may have a valid question and be earnest in assigning points, yet no icon would appear. However, it is intriguing as a key-user status symbol.

Couple of thoughts on our end include making the assignment of points easier (less page views, pull down points menu), and reminders to assign points to open questions (at login, in profile, etc).

Keep the input coming -- this is great stuff!

Best Regards,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes, please, *something* to encourage people to assign points. Although points aren't the, uh, "point", it *is* nice to receive a little appreciation/recognition for time spent as well as reflect to future readers what exactly fixed the problem at hand. I think replacing the "assign points" button with a drop-down to actually assign points is an outstanding idea.

Next subject: I just received one of those partial pages that JRF sees frequently. This time I had the presence of mind (rare, I know) to capture a couple of jpg's of the offending page load. I was refreshing (F5 in IE) the view of the hpux forum home at the time. When it said "done", it certainly wasn't done. The attached zip file has the whole page (in two halves).

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Dan,

Me again: the pest. Hey, I just remembered one other opportunity I've seen to make things better. I notice that everything displayed is in a proportional font. This wreaks havoc on formatted terminal output that we paste into a reply. Would it be possible to allow users to embed HTML tags (
and
for example)in a post or reply to mark up what section should be displayed in a monospace font?

Here's a case in point:
Filesystem kbytes used avail %used Mounted on
/dev/vg00/lvol3 143360 40683 96290 30% /
/dev/vg00/lvol1 111637 23380 77093 23% /stand
/dev/vg00/lvol8 512000 165656 324790 34% /var
/dev/vg00/lvol7 1048576 757275 273099 73% /usr
/dev/vg00/lvol6 131072 85598 43279 66% /tmp
/dev/vg00/lvol5 524288 517009 6825 99% /opt
/dev/vg00/lvol4 131072 28386 96319 23% /home
/dev/vg01/depot 12570624 7376444 5031926 59% /depot

Everything would line up with a monospace font, but it's all skewed with the proportional font.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello Dan,

login today was pretty smooth (ok, I have got the
cookies set before), but the pages came in slowly,
no 404 or SSI error for me, though!

Thanks,
Wodisch
