Well given the fact that they've just recently merged with Compaq and given the fact that they just layed off most of the team that ported HPUX to the IA64, this rumor seems to have some merit. But even if it were true, HP wouldn't be able to drop support for HPUX for at least the next 5 years. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

-Santosh

It's true, Bill Gates told me in a dream, that HP is going to switch to the so powerful XP os.

Actually the dream had to be a nightmare, because we all know that MS doesn't produce OS's worth spit. Maybe BG will get a clue one day and move his app's to NTux??

Seriously, one day, in the maybe not so distant future, a single OS based on opensource linux, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Hi Joe:

Carly knows. Interestingly, I just read an interview with Sun CEO Scott McNealy in which he suggests that HP is going the way of the big systems integrator in lieu of enterprise computing.

http://www.crn.com/Components/Search/Article.asp?ArticleID=30245

Obviously the only constant today is change, and only time will tell.
This rumor has been around for awhile now. One version of it had UX being dropped for Linux.
At HP World Dale Hammer, North American High End Server Product Manager, spoke of the future of PA-RISC processors. There are at least 2 more generations of PA-RISC chips scheduled out over the next 2+ years. Since those chips rarely make it to market on time, it should be longer.
I just don't see them porting Linux to PA-RISC and dropping UX. It just doesn't make sense to me. But, a lot of things HP does just doesn't make sense to me.

Well HP wouldn't really have to port Linux to PA-Risc since (supposedly) HP strategic platform is the IA64 and Linux already runs there (long before Windows 2k I might add :-)

Besides, I thought the the PA-Risc port is already underway:

http://www.parisc-linux.org/index.html

not to mention the fact the 11i has Linux APIs...so is it really so farfetched that HP moves to Linux?

-Santosh

I hope this is just a rumor.
Lets face it , HP-UX has been going for years and has a good track record for reliability and scaleability. LINUX is still a new born baby which is having problems itself with the various vendors arguing about costs / licencing and standards. I personally believe that if Carley is dumb enough to drop development for HP-UX she is just handing the world over to the devil himself and we might as well just rename the earth to Planet Microsoft.

Rumors are wonderful things. They can cause work to be completed, or people to change objectives.

A "fact" that was told me in Oct 99 was that HP had sold their HP3000(MPE) support and were not ging to continue the line. All software HAD to be ported to HPUX before y2k. BTW The machine is still working fine with MPEiX4.0. The dates are still correct, schedules are still running, and the few people left on the machine are "happy, satisfied customers".

I dont know about dropping HP-UX...
Its obvious Tru64 is going to go, based on the fact that it is not really a 'player' when it comes to midrange or enterprise Unix systems and that The Alpha Architecture has been served its last rights ( I belive they have sold the rights to Intel?)

And Linux being the future of Unix?
I doubt it, I have been using Linux for the last 3 years and i grow even more concerned everday about the quality of the code and how it is managed. BinUtils and the kernel are developed by different people, who dont communicate leaving the code scrappy at times, What really needs to be done is moving the entire lot of code into a central repository managed by CVS like the BSDs. There the code can be fully documented, and the OS can be audited for performance and security (Buffer Overflows and Format Strings bugs can be a thing of the past..)

And the Scalability of Linux is a whole other issue to be debated... PA-RISCs port is in very early stages, RedHat, as of 7 has dropped its support for Sparc (Not sure about other distros) and Alpha as mentioned has its days numbered. I guess we will have to see what IA-64 has in store for everyone..

Just my 0.02c

Cheers,

Keiran

The bottom line will be the bottom dollar. If HP-UX makes money it will remain (evolving). It could be rebranded like Sun did to SunOS [which became Solaris], effectively a marketing exercise.

It's true that HP have had/having some financial problems but the world seems to be sliding down that road, so there does seem to be a level playing field.

Tim
