Hi all,

what a great job, thanks a lot for your valuable contribution!

Let me give you more visibility on the actions taken to solve some of the reported issues:

It looks like 'SSI' and 'http404' errors are the top issues experienced within the forums. After investigation, it appears that both are caused by performance issues on forums servers. Thanks to your replies, developers now have a whole list of examples to illustrate the issue. This will help us identify the exact reasons for the issues and allow us to efficiently work on fixing them.

A third issue I will track is the one reported by Mark Vollmers and Richard Darling: in some cases, after having logged in, there is something wrong with the display, links are missing, font is much bigger,...
This issue was already reported some time ago. After investigation, it appears that this problem happens whenever one tries to log in after having entered a forums category, and not from the home page.
As a workaround,
- get first to the forums home page
- log in before accessing categories
- now you can access the forums with the right display

A bug was spotted by some of you who tried to access previously moved messages. As an explanation, if we feel that a question was posted to a wrong family of questions, we sometimes will move the entire thread to a more appropriate family. This will leave a message in the original category with a link to the new thread location. It appears that for some time now, all such messages contain broken links leading to a '404' error.
To minimize the impact, we decided not to move any further message from one family to another until the issue is fixed. This unfortunately won't fix issues linked to previously moved messages.

I also submitted the virus issue reported by Jim Donovan and Rita Workman for investigation. Rita, I really feel sorry for you! I will do my best to make sure that no further virus infects the community. I am not too sure of the solutions that can be applied to avoid this in the future.

The javascript errors - thanks, Volker - seem to be happening on certain browsers/platform combinations, as I could never reproduce the problem myself. I submitted it anyway.

In the future - thanks again, Jim! - other solutions to report issues and propose enhancements to forums will surely be implemented. Your proposal for new forums dedicated to such discussions sounds very good. Thanks for sharing your visions of the future, you really help us design the solutions that meet your needs.

Again, we appreciate your participation in the ITRC forums. Do not hesitate to submit further issues, clarify some points or propose enhancements. Thanks to all of you for helping build a positive user community!

Best regards,
Laurent

Forums admin

Hi all,

Please post replies to this message to let me know of the issues you experienced using the HP forums. I heard about SSI errors, performance issues, javascript errors,.. I would like to get a clearer picture of what is happening today, so that we know where to concentrate our efforts.

Help me keep our developers busy!

thanks in advance

Laurent
Forums admin

It seems that many object retrieval issues still exist. These days the most common problem is 404 not found errors. These seem to be associated with retrieving message threads. Often they can be retrieved after repeated attempts, but not always. It is apparent that the system is sometimes loosing this data. The SSI and no data in page errors are still common though (usually in listing pages and other common object pages).

There has been some improvement when you compare it to the conditions that we were experiencing during the last two months of last year. I have recently run into some other websites (non HP) that seem to be experiencing the same sort of errors and they have the same poor response 'feel'. Performing a simple Google search on 'SSI error' shows that these errors have become common. This suggests to me that there is something very wrong with the underlying database engine/webpage technology.

A reload of the site sorted it out.

However these errors seem to have become more apparent since last weekend .... was some work done on the ITRC servers at the weekend .... not much was posted during this period ?

As to the others .... I find them intermittent .... but the 404 has definitley become more regular.

Hi Laurent:

I am still experiencing very occasional SSI and '404' errors. They seem to happen when attempting to open a community post -- either a current one, or one returned from a search.

Another very annoying anomoly is the dead link. When an ITRC administrator moves a question in the Forum, leaving the hyperlink that says ?This question has been moved. Click here to view.?, the link cannot be followed.

That is, clicking on the ?here? gives a
404 (file not found) error.

As an example, look at Richard Barr's posts in the Servers (e3000 & 9000) forum:

. ?ps -ef?
. ?Fast Ether Channel?

...BTW, I reported this on 02/13 [ITRC Feedback #769138g]...

On a positive note, most of the problems we've fought through since the November upgrade are gone (thankfully!).

Your solicitation of trouble reports by posting this query is very much appreciated. I'd like to see a formalization of this process, though, and a corollary one, too:

I think we need TWO, new general places from which we can "weave" threads: (1) a New Feature Suggestion (NFS) board whereon the community could post enhancement suggestions for discussion; and (2) a "Field Trouble Report" (FTR) board where known problems are posted BOTH by the Forum CA and by the community at large.

The NFS board would be the input engine for future features. The FTR board would go a long way to eliminating frustration and needless duplication of posts and reports when problems exist that cannot be immediately rectified.

I would suggest that a new Family house both these categories.

Thanks for listening, and again, "welcome aboard"! With warm regards, Jim.

...JRF...

OK, this is a bigger issue than getting an SSI error. You need to implement an anti-virus scanner for the attachements people create on this forum!!

See this thread:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,1150,0x8c6ddfe5920fd5118fef0090279cd0f9,00.html

Hi Laurent,

I login through the europe-site, which reports a syntax error every time on page
http://europe-support.external.hp.com/login/bin/doc.pl/screen=loginServiceLoginForm/sid=e9b040ce135bb837d0?Service=ESTAFF
It does not affect functionality, but still reports errors (';' missing) either at line 808 col 5 or line 853 col 5.

BTW, you should update the notification footers, as you are the one in charge now :-).
You are doing a great job with this forum.

Volker
Hi Laurent.
Had a ssi error this morning when i tried to access the ITRC server.
The 404 Object not found still appears from time to time, but this seems to be a performance problem on your server site.
If i try it several times, i usually get through. Is the new program for the ITRC server in place now or is it being replaced piece by piece ?
Rgds
Alexander M. Ermes
