I have an issue on a large database server with a great deal of SAN disks. It seems that the HBA's were reconfigured several times and the disks were moved to different ports for performance reasons. Now we are in a situation where we cannot add any new disk instance numbers due to an error from the kernel indicating we have exceeded our fcpdev instance number of 255. Will ioinit -c in conjunction with removal of /etc/ioconfig and /stand/ioconfig solve this problem?

Will I need to import my volume groups?

Yes, you are headed in the right direction. You probably have a number of inactive instance numbers from the various changes that were made to your san over the years.

Here is a procedure to deal with that issue.

Do a make_tape_recovery backup before you begin, this procedure is destructive.

Any applications that use raw disk will have to be reconfigured.

There is also a good procedure on this in Keenen's book HP CSA.
Procedure is linked in this thead:
http://search.hp.com/redirect.html?url=http%3A//forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do%3FthreadId%3D475027&qt=Renumber+hardware+instance+ioinit&hit=2
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-60103/B2355-60103_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-60103/00/06/672-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-60103/00/06/672-toc.html&searchterms=instance%7cnumber%7cioinit&queryid=20041123-135838

SEP
