When I run an ioscan -funC disk I notice the following:

disk 18 10/8.6.0 sdisk NO_HW DEVICE SEAGATE ST34573WC
/dev/dsk/c5t6d0 /dev/rdsk/c5t6d0

I have found an HP document that details how to swap a bad mirrored disk by "hot swapping". How do I know whehter or not I can actually "hot swap" the disk above?

Hi,

You have to have a hot swap cabinet or hot swap bay build in your machine for the disk to be hot swapable.

C.

Internal drive? If so, I'm pretty sure it's not hot swappable. If it's external, it depends on the type of disk enclosure.

Pete
10/8 looks like an external FWD controller on a K-class. If you can confirm this is a K-class server then in my opinion, yes - this disk is in an external hot swappable enclosure (a Jamaica) which means it can be replaced on the fly without a reboot.
10/8 is supposed to be a "Optional I/O (HSC) connector". So the question is - is it a "Jamaica"/HASS or not.

Pete

The model command confirms:

9000/889/K460

The drive in question is a "pluggable" SEAGATE. Since it is pluggable (meaning that I could literally pull this thing out), does that constitute an EXTERNAL drive?

When you get right down to it, the ultimate test is: does the drive have a little lever/catch that you can use to remove it from the enclosure or do you have to tear it apart and remove screws to get it out? If you can use the lever to remove it, it's got to be hot-swappable.

Pete

Thanks, everyone. This drive does have the "tabs" that enable it to simply be unplugged from the machine (as opposed to having to remove alot of screws). Based on this, we are going to proceed with the procedure to replace a bad mirror disk using hot-swapping.

Just a tip - Make sure you have a make recovery of the root partition before attempting a hot swap. If you hot swap and for some strange reason lose the other disk...
