HP UX Server D280

We have an HPUX D280 Server to which we want to attach an HPC1556D External DDS3 Dat Drive.

Bearing in mind the age of the Server, I need to know if there will be any problems attaching the Dat Drive.

Also, being new to Unix, I need to know what I must set the SCSI ID to. (The Server has three external SCSI ports - two are used - plus an internal CD and internal tape drive

ioscan -fnC disk
ioscan -fnC tape
ioscan -fnC external_bus

This will give you a complete picture of the current scsi id situation to pick a good one for the tape drive.

I believe you have the scsi technology in the standard D280 server to attach a DDS3 external drive. We've got one hung off our D280.

Hello,

A C1556D is a Single Ended Narrow SCSI-2 dat drive so you have to plug it on the 50pin SCSI ports.

The SCSI address must be different than other SCSI elements on the same bus, if there is no other elements on the bus where you want to plug it, the best choice (for me) is 4.

If I can safely assume this is a SE-SCSI device then you should almost certainly use the built-in SE-SCSI bus. This is a continuation of the internal SE-SCSI bus. Even if there is already an external device attached to this bus you should daisy-chain your tape drive to it and make sure that the terminator is placed at the end of the chain and that no devices have internal termination enabled.

Do an ioscan -fn. The SE-SCSI bus will be on hardware path 8/16/5

For example you will probably see the
internal tape drive at
8/16/5.0.0 (SCSI ID 0)
the internal CD-ROM at
8/16/5.2.0 (SCSI ID 2)
the internal controller at
8/16/5.7.0 (SCSI ID 7)

Pick an unused SCSI ID within the range 0-7 and set you new drive to that value.

HP-UX has no dedicated SCSI ID's so that unlike PC's SCSI ID 0 is not expected to be the first boot device. The "standard" on D -boxes was SCSI ID 0 for the internal DAT, SCSI ID 2 for CD-ROM and SCSI ID 5 or 6 for the boot drive if SE-SCSI disks were the boot disk. Your D-box had an option for an internal hot-plug bay so if you have that option your boot disks are on a separate HVD SCSI bus otherwise the boot disks were on the internal SE-SCSI bus.
