My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of
the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent
dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical
because much of it has been lost.

2) Done, thanks!
Clarify more distinctly the meaning of the new message button within a thread
so it will no longer be confused with the reply button.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Done, thanks!
Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

7) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones
are.

8) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

9) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by
setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

10) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

11) A new hat for the 50,000 point level.

Hi,

I'd like to repeat a suggestion I made at the end of the Issues thread for last month [on September 36th ;) ]

"Since many of the posts here in the Issues thread deal with posts ... that start out in the wrong forum, perhaps someone could consider adding a button that says something like, "Report This Thread to Moderators", which would open a small text window where one could write "Please move this thread" or "This thread is spam", etc., and then the contents of the window would get forwarded to the Moderators. Just an idea."

Cheryl mentioned that the moderators already monitor this thread closely for posts about messages that need action, and that getting e-mail about those messages would make her grumpy. Cheryl and all the other moderators do a fantastic job, and I certainly would like to keep her smiling, so this is just a suggestion, probably something that doesn't even need to be fixed.

Too much time, too much caffeine, a dangerous combination for me. Keep up the good work. :)

Howabout a second submit button that would submit the post and turn on notification at the same time. Or at least a Notification button on the Thank You for Posting page? I don't want notification every time but when I do I have to go back to the thread and turn it on.

I couldn't post at all yesterday. Every time I clicked on reply I got the "Page not found" error. Was that a forum issue or local?

IE 6, Windows 2000 (no don't laugh).

One lame request, and one small request:

1. Any way to put in just a little bit more information on a closed thread?

Me as the responder:
I was going to respond to a user, but their discussion was already closed. The answer was...ok. But they it was only one response. And I had more information that was providing a completely different way to solve the problem.

Ah I remember. The guy did not think it is possible to store ksh array information in a file, and later retrieve it. Somebody agreed with him. I didn't. It is possible. I do it. But I could not respond because the author closed the thread after one response. The author is now convinced there is no way to do it. (He was a little bit before too).

Me as the author:
I honestly forget what question I had. But I gots answers, so I closed my thread. A guy had another way to solve my problem. Lucky for him he found another one of my posts, and was able to put the answer there. It worked for me. But it was a kludge.

Perhaps......?????
A response to a closed thread is allowed if:
a. the author accepts the addition within 72 hours?
b. if the author does nothing, the addition deletes itself.
This would be considered a non-requested response.
(Yeah. It's probably too much work to be worth it).

2. Oh I have one more suggestion:
Next to the author's name put the number of questions they have assigned points to. I only have 36 points to go to get a goofy hat. I only seem to help people that apparently do NOT want help, and rarely assign points. (Actually just viewing the forums helps in my JOB. But the point assignment helps me know if the problem got solved).

I like these basics.

1. Close thread enabled only if
- All posts have points asigned
- A reason for the closure is given (no empty message accepted)
(of course this does not apply to Dan in the issues thread :] )

2. Have an option to accept additional info after closure within 4 days (keep weekinds in mind)

OR

2a. Make a close-thread two-phased.
- At post time, a message that the thread is closed and will not accept posts after 4 days.
- If within those 4 days no posts were added that were accepted by the author, close it for real, disabling new posts.

Just braindumping here.

For threads like issues/success/statistics, Dan and I now close the thread with a reference to the next thread which is logical enough not to accept any posts after that.

I would like to second H.Merijn in that when you bust your brain on a question, post like mad to solve the problem and then the Author closes the thread with no points assigned and just says "Thanks".

Even 0 points would give us feedback of what worked or not! I don't mind helping users who "never" assigned points, but to just close the door on your face is rude!

Can we get a sticky flag for keeping a thread at the top of the forum! This would be used for a FAQ or Commonly Asked Questions where the answers specific to the forum you are in can be found before posting the same question again?

John, those "sticky" threads have links in the left part of the page, underneath the hats. If you beg hard enough, Dan might add other useful stuff.

How about a way to revise point totals you've assigned. Once or twice I gave somebody 7 points for a partial answer and then found I missed something and the whole solution was there. I should have given a 9 or 10.

If you come later to the conclusion that an already assigned answer should be rated higher, just type it into a new reply that the answer has the solution. The author of the answer might reply again if he still follows the thread. So you can give him a bunny.

About the forum layout in general. It seems that the typical php-based forums features are being requested for (sticky question, ...). What I miss from time to time is the possibility to quote (a part of) an answer. And the possibility to browse the complete thread in the reply window (instead of opening it in a new tab of the browser).

What I miss from time to time is the possibility to quote (a part of) an answer. And the possibility to browse the complete thread in the reply window (instead of opening it in a new tab of the browser).

What I just did (and regularly do):
- start a reply
- use "back" in the browser
- move through the stream till I found your post again
- select/copy the above text
- use "forward" of browser
- paste selected text

If necessary, repeat

Seems to me to quite meet your requirements..

let me repeat the request by several posters from previous months:
Can we have a IA64 category __WITHIN__ the VMS forum?
(And I would guess HPUX & Tru64 to have similar wishes)

The current Itanium issues within Servers are nearly NEVER relevant to our interests,
and IA64-related VMS issues now get mostly posted as VMS-general or VMS-languages, which is not what we would prefer.

Don't know if it is possible but just thought i can discuss it.

Can we have our own category wherein one can see question only to their interested areas (by choosing no. of subcategories or catogories and combine them) where one can keep track of it and reply to them instead of keep changing the category and see the questions of our interest.

Why not just keep all the HP-UX ones on screen and choose which ones to read? Or are you talking about only seeing certain subcategories of HP-UX?

I find there are so few that don't interest me that they don't get in the way while I'm looking down the list.
