As I understand, just upgrading the HP will not upgrade your oracle database or the application. I am afraid once you upgrade your HP to 11.0, you need to install your oracle database( existing version) for HP 11.0 first. and then you migrate your database on HP 11.0 for the existing oracle database version. Oracle database installation CD comes for differnet version of the HP version. That is why same version of oracle on HP 10.20 will not work on HP 11.0 unless you install and migrate for the specific version of HP.

If you decide to upgrade the database, then you can go ahead.

We are currently using HP-UX 10.20 on K260 with 1GB memory. I was told if I simply upgrade the OS to HP-UX 11, the system performance will be degraded or deteriorated. May I know how much additional system resources do I need to put in so that the overall system performance will be better or at least remain the same as before? Is there guideline on the system overhead when upgrading to HP-UX 11? How about HP-UX 11i?

How about my existing Oracle applications? Do I need to recompile them to 64-bit so that I can take advantage/benifits of HP-UX 11?

Thank you for all inputs,

hi,
u can upgrade the os from 10.2 to 11.0. make sure that the present 10.2 is 32 or 64 bit. if orcale is in 32 bit 10.2 and if u upgrade to 64 bit 11.0 orcale gives problem. from 64 bit 10.2 to 64 bit 11.0 no problem at all.

You will need a bit more disk to hold the op sys, but with a K, you should have plenty.

You will see about the same performance, some things are quicker, some slower, it works out about the same.

As part of a good policy, create an Ignite make_recovery tape of your system before you start from 10.20 to 11.00

Make sure you have the required minimum PDC revision and minimum firmware revision installed for your processors.

Do a full backup of your system so that you can restore selectively most of the files that you have customized (/etc/hosts; /etc/services; crontab file;) but not the volume group related files and not the device files.

You cannot restore Omniback, Oracle or any other application directly as is. You would have to install them with the right CDs.(after installation, you can restore any configuration files that you have saved.

Is it true that HP-UX 11 will consume more memory resource than HP-UX 10.20 ? Is there any HP recommended memory requirement for upgrading to OS 11 ? Someone told me you should have at least 4GB memory in order to run your applications smoothly in OS 11, Is that true?
I think your System will just run fine after the upgrade from 10.20 to 11.
I did almost the same Upgrade before Y2K.
The System was a D-class with 1GB Ram.
First Upgrade was from 10.20 to 11, with same Oracle 7.3 DB. No change in System Performance was detected.
Second Upgrade was from Oracle 7.3 to 8.1.6 and Ram from 1GB to 3GB.
After adjusting the Oracle-Parameters (eg. SGA-Size, ...) the overall Performance was better, because of the bigger SGA in Memory.

Christian
How long it was between your first upgrade and second upgrade? Are you able to adjust Oracle-parameters without increasing RAM from 1GB to 3GB? You see I am running Oracle 8.0.5 on K260 with 1GB RAM, if I simply upgrade OS from 10.20 to 11, will there be any performance problems or should I increase memory size? My concern is that K260 is already obsolete and memory chip for K260 is very expensive(512MB costs about S$13k) and we don't have enough budget to upgrade to 4GB RAM for each K260 and K250. Any better solutions?

Hi there.
What we did with such upgrades :
Get the necessary CD's ( Oracle Enterprise Edition for HP-UX 11 will contain 32-bit and 64-bit version )
export of Oracle databases (Oracle Application data ).
export of OmniBack data.
make_recovery tape of old system
Upgrade to HP-UX 11
Check functionality of OmniBack
Install Oracle for HP-UX 11 ( 32-bit / 64-bit )
Install empty Application tables
Import Oracle data.
This just a short hint about stepping through the upgrade.
Rgds
Alexander M.
We have a HP 9000 K 100 currently with 288mb of memory, we are about to upgrade the memory to 1024mb and then upgrade our OS from 10.20 to 11.0 should we expect to see a performance decrease in the machine or because of the memory upgrade can we expect an increase? We primarily use run a Progress database and inventory tracking software on this server.
