Congrats to Stuart Browne on his 5000th Linux forum point. No thread, the next set will be when He makes Linux Pharoh.

I must (or self importantly think I must) jump on the bandwagon concerning inadvertant threads being created by attempts to hit the reply button.

I find myself responding to what I think is a thread, but is actually a response. There must be something we can do to cut down on that. Education doesn't seem to help, so some design changes in the page layout seem warranted, something like what Pete Randall suggests.

SEP

Dan,

Me too noted that one of the Patch related question on Tru64 forum was gone soon after I'd posted a response. It was talking about a particular issue with "find" command on Tru64 v5.1B.
May be Michaele ad I are talking about the same thread disappeared suddenly.
I am curious to know why ?

regds,
Abdul.

Hi John,

We're all here. We browse all categories for incorrect posts etc, once a question has replies in it even in the wrong category we tend to leave it where it is to avoid confusing the author.

Generally move requests are posted in this thread, we get the reply notification email, then move the post. Are there a few that need to be moved?

Cheers,

Gary

I think there is a point moving threads that are in the wrong catagory.

1) A Linux post in HP-UX is harder to find with a search

I encourage all my fellow forumers to point out, in this thread posts that need to move.

I think the decreased volume of posts in this thread is a testament to the hard word of Dan & company. Nice work.

I'd like to see the cute but innaccurate descrepencies in the point assignment totals fixed and some of the other little things in the profiles get fixed.

I'd like to see the occaisional network speed issues resolved. I have a T1 in my private offices now and it freaks me out when HP is slow.

Seriously, Nice job everyone. Above and beyond the call.

SEP

Better late than never!

Dan,

My monthly attempt to summarize the most grievous, most oft-repeated issues

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are
numerous threads which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics
postings being a prime example. Other examples point out that the benefit of
the ITRC database as a resource has been severely compromised. An excellent
dialog on wiping disks via various commands has now been rendered non-sensical
because much of it has been lost.

2) Clarify more distinctly the meaning of the new message button within a
thread so it will no longer be confused with the reply button.

3) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other
miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these
items can bypass them.

4) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

7) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones
are.

8) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can
be understood.

9) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by

setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus
Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

10) From Merijn: The ability to have a fixed signature in one's profile.

Pete

In addition to Pete's desired functionality, I want to repeat my suggestion from about a couple of months ago :

Instead of HP admins trolling these threads about misplaced postings or removal requests(like a linux or wintel question in hpux forums) place a button which looks/functions like "reply" button which says "report this topic" when clicked takes you to screen asking what you want to report about it, like misplacement, duplicate, deregatory content, etc.

The posting Michael was questioning is simply the output of the dr_dt command, which diagnoses the health of your CDE environment. It looks to me like the poster had some host name resolution issues that he apparently worked out for himself.

Pete

Hi Stuart,

Although the question has been posted in the wrong family, and replied to, we try to avoid moving questions unless they are in the completely wrong family, (ie a printer question posted here), as it can confuse the authors who would generally be new community members,

Thanks,

Gary
