topic cant start dtterm in Operating System - HP-UX

Sometimes, when working on hpux11 from reflection X I cant start dtterms either from
commandline or from the toolbox in cde.

What happens is that it looks like it is starting, but it never actually appears.

Doesn anyone know the cause of this problem? Ive been having this problem on different hpsystems for a couple of years.
I though it perhaps had something to do with kernel variable nptys or similar, but it doesn seem to be the case as there is only me being logged on.

hi,
This problem has been known to occur in systems
with incorrect permissions for the /dev/pts/0
file.

We recommend that you verify that the permissions
for this file are set to 755.
the permissions on my system was 620 for /dev/pts/0 so I changed it to 755.

I checked on a couple of other unix systems, and they also had 620..
755? How about 666? What would you need execute permission for?

Pete

If this were permissions problems why is the problem intermittent ?

the affected users are they using ksh or NFS mounted home directories etc ... sounds to me this could be the old ksh and history file problem ....

any clues in $HOME/.dt/errorlogs ?

what CDE patch levels do you have installed ? Does dtterm produce a core ?

Could this be kernal parameter relatted eg tty's etc ? maybe check syslog.log for clues next time it occurs ?

alex, I think you make a good point about permissions and the problem returning. However, I checked everything else you suggest. I have a recent copy of support plus installed.
