I hav a cron that make a fbackup all nights. Ramdomly the copy doesn??t finish correctly and it logs a message like this:

fbackup(3013): WRITE ERROR while writing data record, at media record 9615
fbackup(3102): attempting to make this volume salvagable
fbackup(3123): could not read the previous checkpoint record
fbackup(3105): writing 2 EOFs and rewinding the tape
fbackup(3106): please mount a good tape
fbackup(3310): enter 'yes' when volume 1 is ready on /dev/rmt/1m,
or 'no' to discontinue:
fbackup(3004): writer aborting
fbackup(1002): Backup did not complete : Reader or Writer process exit

I supoused that the tape was wrong, but as i change it every day i didn??t worry (I have one per day of the week).
Next week i try again and it made the copy rigth.
This is happening sometimes with one tape an another with other one. ??May be the dlt and not the tape? But if is the dlt drive why not all the days?
Ive seen this sort of error many times before.

If you encounter this on multiple tapes then its more than likely the tape drive itself is faulty. The only other thing to try is put a cleaning tape in each day before your backup tape and if you can try some new tapes for a few days. If you still get these write errors using new tapes and cleaning each day then the drive is faulty and needs replacement.
We have received this error numerous times over the last two years since upgrading to an L1000, and have had to replace the tape drive three times. I hope HP is reading these postings.
