If you have a mouse, and it still moves, then this appears to be more of an X-server/client problem, as a normal console would not have a mouse ;-}

If you are able to log in via the network, then the system is definitely not hung.
All I can suggest at the moment is to check for patching levels for the network, X and Motif.

OIther than that you may find something logged in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log, or in teh Xerrors file.

I'm a bit of a beginner on HP.
The system console on my sever has frozen - mouse moves but not the windows - but I can ssh into it fine and the system activity is still low.

How do I safely reset the console without interupting the server activity.
(I know that SGI has a four-key combination to reset the console - what about HP?)

If you are able to login via network then do the following:

ps -ef | grep console .

Kill the the getty process for the console. YOu should be able to get login in case the serial console port on the HP , Serial Port on the terminal and the cable are fine.

Manoj
