Hi
We are migrating from HP-UX 11 to 11i. We have an application and a database running on the server. On the proc side, what are all the precautions I should take? Do I need to recompile the sources or the current executables will work without any issues??
Thanks and regards,
Mani

Hi,

Release note for 11.11 say that "generally" all application compile on 11.00 run on 11.11. Normally you can run your application without compilation.
For your database I don't know.

Have a nice day,
Jerome

In that vast majority of cases you need to do nothing... details to be found in Chapter 12 of the 11i release notes (/usr/share/doc/11iRelNotes.txt):

HP-UX supports forward compatibility from 11.0 to 11i. This chapter will
describe what this means for executable applications, object files, source
files, data, and libraries, and will also discuss compatibility exceptions.

The following types of compatibility are supported from 11.0 to 11i for
well-behaved applications:

* Binary compatibility

* Source compatibility

* Data compatibility

* Relocatable object compatibility

* Upgrade compatibility

Known exceptions to compatibility are described below.

A well-behaved application adheres to the following characteristics:

* Uses only documented, public APIs

* Adheres to the required practices that are specifically documented

* Does not use documented features that are specifically described as
having platform, architecture, or configuration limitations

* Does not decompose an HP-UX product and then reuse the results of the
decomposition

Regards...
Dietmar.

1) backup application , data, ignite DAT
2) ask to software application if HPUX patches are necessary
3) swinstall with mode "match what target has"
4) install patches needed by application to be support
5) start application and verify

I never had suprise when migrating between 9.0 to 9.07 and then 10.00 to 10.20 . So dont worry , be happy ;-)

B.R.

Merydine

You should recompile and relink everything, but that's your call. I always beleive that it's cleaner to have things pointing to the correct locations.

live free or die
harry

Hi Mani:
I upgraded our box from 11.0 to 11i and posted some things to this post:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xabbc0bce6f33d6118fff0090279cd0f9,00.html

You may need to recompile if you are going from 32 bit to 64 bit. Otherwise I would think everything should work. Just be sure to check with your vendors for patches or new product versions you may need for 11i.....
