Hi folks,

I am using an X server on HP-UX 11.0, B2000 workstation and a "Compaq" (Logitech) USB optical wheelmouse.

My window manager is Gnome 1.4 and it is running on a remote A-Class system under HP-UX 11.11, managing all the windows on my local HP-UX 11.0 system with the HP-UX 11.0 X server.

Unfortunately the mouse wheel doesn't work. Everything else works fine.

Does anyone have any idea how I can make the mouse wheel work?

Will be rewarded with points of course :-)

Thanks, Christian

I can only advice you to clean the mouse wheels which I normally do ..

Best way is to call your H/W Support person and get it replaced !

Regds,

Kaps

I have yet to see a wheeled mouse work with HP-UX, many brands of mouse, many X emulators.

Same deal with Linux.

If its been done, I've not figured out how yet.

Its a feature.

SEP

1. I did mention that this is an optical mouse. The "wheel" can be used to scroll inside windows (theoretically).
2. Interestingly enough, I have a colleague who sits nearby and he didn't need to set anything, his wheel mouse just worked! He's using CDE. I don't know if a wheel mouse will work better for CDE but I don't see why that should make a difference.

The support of a wheel mouse (or any hardware feature) depends on the software used. For instance, in your case, there are multiple layers that can cause the problem:

1) the mouse driver in your B2000 doesn't support the wheel. Check out SAM if it has something controlling the options of the mouse driver.

2) the X-server on your B-class doesn't support a wheel mouse, thus not creating X-Events when the wheel is turned. You could check it by using the same window manager your colleague uses.

3) The X-program you tried to use the wheel in doesn't support the wheel.

I would go for SAM first, then try to use CDE like your colleague to check if your X-server has the wheel-mouse-support.

Hope this helps you on your way.

check the Xserver has the USB driver :

search your /var/X11/Xserver/logs/X0.log file for /usr/lib/X11/extensions/hid.1, if it's not there what's your Xserver patch level like, also compare your frinds working systems /usr/dt/config/C/sys.resources file with your own.

ps I have this working on my 11.00 system with gnome and a usb mouse

I haven't installed an Xserver patch yet but I'm planning for PHSS_29168 or newer and then I'll try xmodmap -pp and then hopefully the mousewheel will be working. My Unix boxes have been running for almost four months now without reboot so I'll wait until I need to reboot or restart the X server for whatever reason.

Christian

Dear Edgar,

All I can guess is, as already mentioned,
xmodmap -pp.

Also, as mentioned above, X server revision. I just installed the latest available patch for HP-UX 11.0: PHSS_30500 B.11.00.22 Xserver cumulative patch.

You have to check the prerequisites though. Before installing PHSS_30500 I installed the prerequisite PHKL_30376.

As far as I am aware, the "driver" for the mouse is in the X server, so an X-server patch might help you.

Hope this helps, Christian
