Hi all!!!!

Need on little help on the difference in the hardware/software between HP servers (Midrange) and HP (PA-RISC) workstations.

I currently have an application and database that I deploy to L-Class servers for production. Will this application and database deploy to an HP workstation? Are there two software releases (HPUX Server and HPUX Workstation? If so, what is the difference? Can HPUX Server be loaded on an hpux workstation?

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

...jcd...

For HP-UX 10.20 and lower there were definitely different releases for 800 series (servers) and 300,400 & 700 series (workstation) machines.

Since HP-UX 11.0 the Workstation and Server operating systems have been the same.

There are some HP-UX software products that are not officially supported on workstations (like MC Service Guard), but you can install the software anyway and it will probably run.

Nowadays, anything that will run on a server class should definitely run on a workstation class machine.
Hi,

Usually servers come with many IO slots, multiple CPUs and options to upgrade them further. Most of the workstations lack these features. Also, workstations are designed as desktops or to host simple services like DNS, NIS, web servers etc where there may not be a need for heavy processing. In a nut shell, the room to grow on a workstation is limited.

OS, patches and most of the software work on both from 11.0 onwards.

-Sri
