Hi:

If you are using Jetdirect, then you want to setup a "network" printer. If you are using an LPD/LPR arrangement, then you would use a "remote" printer.

...JRF...

I have a remote location office which has a Lexmark printer attached via HP jetdirect. I would like to print to that printer from our local office which has an HP-UX box. My question is do I have to setup through SAM as a remote printer or network printer? What dictates which way I set this up?

Hi Edward,

I have several Lexmarks and some are attached using an External JetDirect with a parallel connection to the printer. Those are set up
using jetadmin. I typically use one of the HP Laserjet model scripts since the Lexmarks speak PCL. Those connected directly to the network (without an external JetDirect) are setup via SAM as remote printers and use rlp.

Clay

Hi Edward

I think Jet Direct would be the ideal solution to you to print , we also have similar shops / office stup across the geopgraphy and we use Jetdirect to print anything on the network .

MAnoj Srivastava

I have setup through Jetadmin as a remote printer and was able to send a test print down. The issue is that the remote printer is setup with an external jetdirect card J3263a and not to a host...therefore I need to setup as a network printer. I went back into Jetadmin going into configuration taking the option to add the printer to the local spooler.
I entered in the IP address. It hung there for awhile and then it filled up the /opt file system by putting out a new file.. /opt/hpnp/tmp/hpnpname
In the file is the below and the rest just blank pages till filled up.

Printer Description:
--------------------
MANUFACTURER        :Lexmark International;
COMMAND SET         :PCL 6 Emulation, PostScript Level 3 Emulation, NPAP, PJL;
MODEL               :Lexmark Optra T616CLS

I tried this fron a 10.2 system using Jetadmin D.06.15 and a latest 11.0 system using D.06.21. Results the same on both.

I appreciate whatever guidance you can give as I have had not much success with support so far.
Thanks
