We had a similar problem last year. In our case, the authenication module in Informix is single threaded. We would get a queue of users trying to access informix. If my memory serves, the informix module issues a gethostbyname system call which sometimes required a trip to the Domain Name Server. When this happened, we had a batch of 'slow logins'. Our resolution was to provide entries for the remote users in our /etc/hosts file.

Hope this helps!
