Hi,

Please note that Glance and predictive is diffrent thing.
Glance mainly for performance whereas predictive for proactive awareness main focus on Hardware fault.

Regards,
Hi All,

I'm working on trying to implement and install
GLANCE for monitoring my systems. I am assuming I can just install this from the
Application S/W CD's.

Can anybody tell me about their experiences here?

Hopefully it will be easier to install than
the Predictive Support, which requires some
hardware changes for modems.

I'm looking for a simple install and implementation. Does this come free with HP 11.0?

What are the pro's and con's? How are people
using GLANCE? Etc... etc..

Thank You,
Laurie

Glance doesn't come free but you can install the trial from the Applications CDs and get familiar with it. The install in straight forward.

If you need real time performance and snapshoots Glance is the way to go. For historical data you would have to use MeasureWare(free) and draw the graphs with PerfView.

Regards,
Ovidiu

A trial GLANCE comes when you install the SYSTEM CD. This trial is 60 days if I remember correctly.

Otherwise, it is not free unless you want to reinstall your server every 60 days.

The paid for version takes a software key to get it from the CD and install it.

It is a realtime viewer and I use it to see what is currently happening on the machine. It is so much better than top, but does take more resources to run.

It has an X version GPM (glance Plus), and a terminal version glance.

You should be able to use the trial version, and you may have to install it, to see if it is something that you want to pay for.
Hi Laurie:

'Glance' is found on the Application CD. At least for the December 2000 ones it's the third CDROM. No reboot is required to install it, and it's worth it's weight in gold!

For a full Glance installation (with MeasureWare) you will want something like products B3693AA, B3701AA & B4967AA.

Once Glance has been installed you can find documentation in /opt/perf/paperdocs/gp/C/

For MeasureWare, after installation, see /opt/perf/paperdocs/mwa/C/ .

For documentation from the web, go to this url:

http://ovweb.external.hp.com/lpe/doc_serv/

Regards!

...JRF...

Hi Laurie (again):

Oh, I forgot to add: Glance has inbuilt help for metrics on each screen. Typing a question mark character brings up the primary index to each screen. Once on a screen (e.g. "i" for I/O by FileSystem), you can toggle help on that screen by typing "h". From there, you can see a brief overview of what each metric represents on that screen.

A very useful screen is the 't'able of key kernel parameter values like 'nfile'.

...JRF...

Just so you don't have to go through the same hell as me trying to get this product, The HP OpenView MeasureWare Agent is now called OpenView Vantage Point Performance Agent. There is an entire set of tools that goes along with this.

Hope this helps

Brian
