Good admin practice would indicate that you manage filesystems other than root for your data.

The default size on my 11iV1 system was 208 MB, not GB. I increased that to 1024 MB at install time to accomodate mistakes that commonly occur around here.

To increase on an already running system:

make_tape_recovery to tape.

boot the box with the tape in the drive.

intervene at the 10 second prompt

sea

look for a sequential(tape) device if its P2 do this:

bo P2
N Do not interact.

Watch the console, at the next intervention prompt, hit a key.

Go to the filesystems tab and make root the size you want.

SEP

Actually 208GB is plenty. If this is a cold install then you can increase the size under Disks and Filesystems. Having said this, this is really no valid reason to have a root filesystem larger than 200MB or so. /'s size should be all be static after running a little while. Needing a larger root is an indication that you are not doing something quite right.
Why in the world you want root file system of that much size? The root file system is static and should never be that high. Is something wrong here?

On my system it is 300mb and never grown more than 220 mb.

anil

Even so, everything I said still applies. You can change it during the install but ~200MB is really all you need, even for upgrades, for properly managed HP-UX systems. Similarly, about 140-160MB is a generous size for /stand. You don't need anything like 500MB; I would put 300MB at about the absolute maximum but, of course, it's your box so have at it.
