Hi all,

We deployed a patch last night that will help performance. I would like to ask for your help. If anyone notices any SSI errors or severe performance issues after 1/4/01, 6AM PST, please reply to this message or send feedback in.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

Kind regards,

The Forums Team

Hello Shayne!

Things are still not right. My observations today are the same as Dan's and others -- sometimes quick and sometime extremely sluggish. I too have noticed the early appearance of the "hp home, products & services..." ahead by several seconds of anything else.

The problems with SSI errors persist. Rick Garland's posts (including one just a few minutes ago) cannot be read. Bassey Essien's posts are also unreadable.

Regards!

...JRF...

I noticed the same change in the SSI error message as Dan. One new error for me was getting an SSI message while submitting a reply. The reply was successfully added but I could not view the message, even after several attempts. After a half houtr or so I could view the message everytime.

As regards to speed; some responses are faster, but generally things seem the same.

Hi Shayne,
Ironically, the first time I clicked on this message, I got the ssi error. I noticed a different look, however. Before your patch, my screen would clear and I would get just the ssi error on white. This morning, my screen displayed the usual headings (hp home, products & services, ...) and then the ssi error.
By the way, I use IE5.50
HTH
Mo

There seems to be several pieces of this performance issue puzzle that need to be addressed.

For a while now I have noticed that screen painting has been delayed waiting for graphic elements which come from 'welcome.hp.com'. Part of this problem is that there is a lot of contention with the entire population accessing most HP websites. The other part is that most of these graphic elements have not been optimized. For instance, "hp home" consists of two graphics that could be easily combined into one. This appears to be a situation that is out of the ITRC's control though (corporate mandate I suspect).

Javascript is a pig and the HP web pages are loaded with it. Typically there is a three second delay just to crunch the screen together. I'm using a 600mhz pc which a relatively quick workstation. It must be brutal on slower boxes.

There are delays associated with the HP dns arrangement too. The ttl (time to live) periods are very short requiring continual lookups. When you consider how many dns servers are traversed, the additional delay adds up quickly. In effect, dns caching is next to useless when accessing the ITRC. This also has a negative impact on browser caching too where more often than not a user is going to access a different server which usually forces redownload of all the boiler plate graphics as well.

To sum it all up, the new look and feel of the HP websites (not just the ITRC or Forums) is somewhat painful. There are a variety of things that need to be addressed form a performance perspective in the ITRC sites, but even if the ITRC had instant response, the overhead from the rest of it would still be an issue. I'm accessing via dialup and I normally have an application displaying network thoughput up in another window. It is not often that access to the ITRC ever is a bandwidth problem where it is so slow. The only time I can peak bandwidth is by having multiple ITRC screens updating at the same time. These days I usually have four windows up when I'm in the ITRC. I switch between the windows while the others are updating. Maybe not the best method but sure beats falling to sleep waiting for a screen to paint.
