Dan,

The good new is that my browser crashed and restarting it took care of the problem.

Disregard, kind sir.

Pete

P.S.
Dan,

My monthly request list - please note that some items were corrected in the Sept 20 update - I've left the
m in the list for now so that we can all appreciate the efforts that you and the team put forth:

1) Done (though I have seen a few delayed responses)! Thankyou! Fix the slow submit issue that causes s
o many duplicate postings and duplicate replies (get rid of java?).

2) Done (I believe)! Thankyou! Fix the inablility to assign points issue (java, again?).

3) Pre-assign 0 points to all answers. This eliminates the whining about not assigning points and the ob
sessive pursuit of 100% point assignment ratios. Alternatively, eliminate the tracking of points assignme
nt ratios.

4) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off-topic threads
so that those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

5) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up their own group
ings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well
, you get the idea).

6) Done! Thankyou! (Borrowing from JRF: could you please *not* preload "databases" (just because it is
the lexicographically first item). Instead, make the user choose the correct category.)

7) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

8) Limit the amount of space taken up by "masthead" stuff (headings, descriptions, rankings, etc. at the
top of the page) so we can actually see some questions. This is now worse than ever - I have to page down
just to see the first question.

9) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to page all the way
up to the top of long threads. Also, add the same links to the notification pages.

10) Done! Thankyou! When a question is moved, make the link point to directly to the question, rather t
han just to the category.

11) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

12) Could we have some sort of convergence between the US and European sites? They can't get to our URLs
, we can't get to theirs, Merijn gets the wrong search engine - why do they have to be separate and differ
ent?

13) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones are.

14) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can be understood.

Pete

Hey Dan,

You've got some sort of issue with your October Issues and Successes threads. There are 2 "Notify Me" buttons and some other extraneous text. I am seeing it with Netscape 7.10.

See the attachment for precisely what it's doing. So far, I only see it in your 2 new October threads.

My personal isues list:

1) Relavent info on the response and solution(I know you are working on it).

2) HP people get caught up on points assignment. Set a good example. I don't mind zero point but lets follow forums ettiquette people.

3) I'm with Pete on the search engine, but I think it works okay, just needs refinement.

4) We all know my disagreement with Pete on auto assignment :-) Lets leave it alone.

5) Figure out how to do user test on the next upgrade so it is not disruptive. I think its obvious the quality control on this one was not production quality.

6) Thanks for the upgrade. Overall, its a massive improvement.

SEP

Dan,

Since 14:40 EDT or so, I've been experiencing difficulties accessing the forums. Trying to open threads or return to the hp-ux page via breadcrumb, I (intermittently) get:

service unavailable
The service you are trying to access is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

UNKNOWN

Then, trying to reply to this thread, I got:

Could Not Open URL
The URL you requested does not exist or is not retrievable at this site. You can return to the HP IT Resou
rce Center home page (itrc.hp.com).

(Error HTTP_404)

Pete

Hi Dan,

Figured I'd post this out here, just in case somebody else runs into what I did.

Seems my IE ver 6 browser really hates the Forums. It chokes up, shows me as logged in but refuses to grant me access to things (like to reply to a thread...or worse to read any ITRC Forums responses on a Search).
Seems like the usual MS quality product..

My resolution...got Netscape ver 7.1...and ahhh, everything is finally back to working okay.

Regards to all !
Rita
I know this is an oldie...but I'm popping it back up.

Ran into this on my 11i boxes of late. Hadn't noticed that we couldn't 'talk'.

Note: (We use talk on a couple boxes for those times when a programmer and an operator need to chat to fix those late night headaches..)

Noticed that every tty session was coming in as 'mesg n' as the default. And like above- the parm mesg was set to 1 (on).
Did a short term fix by putting the syntax 'mesg -y' in the /etc/profile.
But my issue is that the problem, from what I have been told, could be caused my message queues getting locked up and hosed and thus new tty sessions are set to mesg 'no'. To fix reboot....not a good option.
...or...
Suggestion was to load patch PHKL_29070.

So...did you get yours fixed?
Anybody else run into this problem?

(Cause you really can't read things too well on that patch at the ITRC site...)

Just wondering,
Thanks,
Rita

Dan,

one request, when looking at a category, there is a list of view options:
-all
-threads with solutions
-questions with no replies
-subscribed to be notified of reply
-top read messages

I would like a "threads without solution" option.
When looking at some categories, there's several pages of new messages per day, and sometimes I just feel like answering some questions (there's no better way to learn than to teach, as they say).

Also,
I noticed the same duplication error with netscape 7.1 at the bottom that patrick mentioned.
Rita- I had the same problem and solution for IE6. Probably just more M$ crap screwing up the day.

just my 2 cents.
-Josh

More attachement issues. I've seen this attachement problem 3 or 4 times now. Text files come across as one line, which seems to be directly related to the filetering out of 'new line' char. in all responses.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=228219

This is not a forum issue per say, but at least Dan reads it.

There needs to be a driver center.

Read this thread:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=228240

software.hp.com does not carry HP-UX hardware drivers. There is in fact no central location for drivers. Some can be found in the itrc patch database, some not.

I know there is a place in itrc that they can be found, but its not obvious from the menus.

Lets make that easier. I applaud the recent change that lets people find Quality and Gold Packs in software.hp.com

Drivers are software right?

SEP

I also think changing the fonts would help. Times New Roman, Courier, ??? I just can't read special chars. I.e. } = curly bracket.

I use emacs to write my reply and messages, mainly because I like the spell checking tool
(I did not use this on my last entry, bad spelling).
Now the reason I mention this here is that lately when I do a cut and paste from my emacs spell checked reply buffer to my mozilla forum reply buffer most of the time this fails,it is recent before I never saw this ! I have not update mozilla or emacs
I thing this cause by the way blank line and space are handled.

If I carefully craft the emacs buffer before cut paste (that is take out all blank line and 2 blank space ) then cut and paste is not a problem.

I way to solve this would be a spell check button but this is perhaps pushing it a bit far.

from a happy IT Ressource Center forums user.

J-P
