side_ss() error messages

Hi

I have an HP B2000 running HPUX 11
that hangs at least once a day. when
it hangs it is not reachable by ping
or telnet and there is no response
at the console.

when it is running, it keeps giving
the following error messages in the
system log file:

vmunix: side_ss(): error in status register
vmunix: side_ss(): SIDE_ERROR_REG 0x0
vmunix: side_ss(): SIDE_SECTOR_CNT_REG 0x3
vmunix: side_ss(): SIDE_STATUS_REG 0x1

-does anyone know what these errors mean?
-any clues on why this system keeps hanging
and how to fix it ?

I think your side_ss messages are unrelated. They refer to the cdrom and there is a patch. Check out this thread:

OK. Let's try this again. First off, here's what should be the appropriate link:

If that doesn't work, go to http://itrc.hp.com, and click on 'Search Technical Knowledge Base' when you get there put 'vmunix: side_ss' into the search field. The link we are trying to reference should be the first one in the list.

The patch that this link recommends is: PHKL_20822 which has been superseded by PHKL_22644

This patch does require a reboot since it is a kernel patch.

I agree with Clay, though, in that this patch may solve the errors in your syslog, but I'm not sure it will keep your machine from crashing. I think the two may not be related. Tackle on problem at a time though. Get one fixed and it may make it easier to fix the other.
