Backup solution

I recently asked for peoples opinions regarding certain backup products, well the goalposts for this project have now changed, so I would be very grateful for any comments on the following:

1. Tivoli Storage Manager
2. CA Brightstor Enterprise Backup
3. NetBackup Enterprise Server

The solution is for Enterprise Backup on a Windows2000 HP-UX And Sun Solaris environment.
I am looking for advice on which is best or any problems with ay of them so I can propose a solution. Thanks in advance.

1. TSM is the most robust and feature-rich, but also will cost the most and require the most admin effort. Once you get it setup the way you want, it just runs. The biggest issues are the hardware, because there are so many moving parts.

2. Never used it, cannot comment.

3. We are just implementing it now. It's MS Windows based, which makes reporting against how the Unix backup went a bit problematic. This will work with a variety of tape libraries.

Veritas Netbackup is not Windows based (Backup Exec is windows based). This software is supported on most OS and is reliable and powerful. The only issue is the cost. I would defenitely consider this as an option. Tivoli and CA Brightstor are also good and industry leaders. What you need to do is to purchase the best suitable for your environment. It might depend on performance, cost, support etc.

Ad I have used Netbackup for Sun and HP in the past and found it reliable and good.

We are using Netbackup Enterprise.

Very robust.

We backup SAP, Oracle, HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, and even Windows Servers - all through a HP RP5400 - actually we have 2 - one at each of our major sites.

We are also using Veritas Netbackup. We tar up the files/directories we want backed up and back up that tar to tape. Netbackup is loaded on a W2K server. We find it reliable and user-friendly. Haven't used the other two, so I cannot comment on those.

I obviously stand corrected! Thanks to Shiju for setting the record strait. We are indeed running Backup Exec, which is basically an entirely different animal altogether.

Netbackup Datacenter in our shop.
Backing up Oracle, SQl, Exchange, as well as standard data files on NT, HP-UX, and Linux.
Very robust, a bit pricy, but ease of operation and low maintenance (after initial setup) make for a big savings.
Very easy to script backups or schedule via the provided gui.

I've used Tivoli Storage Manager and Netbackup (never used CA Brightstore Enterprise Backup).
Between the two, I prefer Netbackup Enterprise server for several reasons:
(1) I found the setup of the server/clients to be easier
(2) I found the initial creation of the backups to be easier
(3) I found the restore process to be more robust
