You might have a UID/GID conflict with your NIS environment.

If the file owner/group & perms don't match Q6 of the FAQ, try changing the UID/GID of gdm in /etc/passwd and /etc/group to unique values.

http://www.hp.com/workstations/support/software/hpux/gnome/doc.html#faq-a6

I've installed the GNOME depot on my HPUX11.00 system but won't start.
The message is;
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start
gdm_config_parse: Can't find the gdm group (nobody). Aborting!

Even with a nobody group I still get the same message.

Steve

Yep! I just followed the Install instructions.
Closed down CDE, modified the desktop file and tried to start GNOME.

on reboot rc.log confirms that CDE server startup is skipped and that an attempt is made to start GNOME server, but the previous error is given.

Steve

The install should have created both gdm user and group. /var/opt/gnome/gdm should be set to restrict access to only the gdm user. Are you in an NIS enviroment perhaps?
