Hi. We've installed a new 1000baseSX NIC in our old N4000, and need to install the driver. I've looked through some threads, and tried to install a couple of patches suggested, but they fail with a warning that they are "sparse patches", and require some foundational files or SW that is not there.

It would be nice if the failure message would tell me what is missing, but that would be way to easy, I guess is the thinking back in the lab where they dream up error messages.

This is an older N4000, maybe 3 years old, but it has the Quality Pack and HWE1100 from June 2002, surely new enough to support gig-E cards. See swlist below.

So, what is the minimum patching or HW enablement or whatever that I can get away with, to get this Gig-E card up and pumping?

I'll do my part with the points if you'll do your part and come through with the grade-A choice answer(s).

[hpux03]root:/ # swlist
# Initializing...
# Contacting target "hpux03"...
...
# Bundle(s):

A5158A B.11.00.10 PCI Tachyon TL/TS Fibre Channel
B3701AA C.03.50.00 HP GlancePlus/UX Pak for s800 11.0
B5458DA C.01.18.06 HP-UX Runtime Environment for Java*
B8342AA B.11.00.10 Netscape Communicator 4.79
B8724AA A.01.07 CIFS/9000 Client
B8725AA A.01.08 CIFS/9000 Server
B9788AA 1.3.1.02.00 Java 2 SDK 1.3 for HP-UX (700/800), PA1.1 + PA2.0 Add On
HPUXEng64RT B.11.00 English HP-UX 64-bit Runtime Environment
HWE1100 B.11.00.0206.5 Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11.00, June 2002
J2559C D.05.15 Hewlett-Packard JetAdmin for Unix Utility
J4189-11001B E.10.18 Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix
OnlineDiag B.11.00.21.10 HPUX 11.0 Support Tools Bundle, Jun 2002
QPK1100 B.11.00.56.5 Quality Pack for HP-UX 11.00, March 2002
UnlimUserLic B.11.00.02 HP-UX Unlimited-User License
perl B.5.6.1.C Perl Programming Language
#
# Product(s) not contained in a Bundle:
#
PHNE_26771 1.0 cumulative ARPA Transport patch
PHSS_26559 1.0 ld(1) and linker tools cumulative patch
PHSS_27858 1.0 OV EMANATE14.2 Agent ConsolidatedPatch
[hpux03]root:/ #

The location of most network drivers are on the the first of the application cd's

Surely its on one of the four.

Stick it in the cd drive, choose a later version, to insure you get the latest driver.

mount /cdrom

cd /cdrom

look around and the directory names will be obviously.

Alternatively:

go to http://software.hp.com

put the part number of the card in the search box.

Search.

If that doesn't come, run the part number through http://docs.hp.com and read the doc, it will tell you how to find the driver software.

I'd have done this work for you but you didn't post the part number.

SEP

Thanks, SEP. Sorry, it's getting late (here).

A6847A 1000baseSX (2nd gen card, supposedly uses the igelan driver).

I need answers on both cards, actually, since we also have an A4926A 1st gen Gig-E card that we plan to install in an even older box, a venerable V-class unit. So, if it's convenient, maybe you could let me know on both of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've been to docs.hp.com, which has several docs on Gigabit Ethernet, none of which go into any detail about which Patch(es) to download for the drivers. I understand that these things change, but give me a starting point, for pete's sake... The quick install guide was my favorite. ..."then load the drivers"... (right up there with the very scientific "and then a miracle happens").

I haven't had any better luck searching for patches using the product number(s), although I did find a nice SAM patch that I'll likely need if I'm going to use it on these NICs.

Anyway, let me know if you turn something up.

FP

Man, it is getting late. I sat down at the wrong laptop, but it's an easy mistake to make when another guy has the ITRC site up, just sitting there...

My second clue should have been that I had to go looking for my question, since some other topic was up on the screen. Oh well... so, the last post has one of our consultant's names on it. That's it, I'm goin' home.

When he has some free time, he's going to show me where to find the stuff. But the point bounty is still out there, until then.

'Night all.

I ran a search on that part number and got this.

I don't think it will help.

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=ISCSISUBSYSTEM

I checked partsurfer for all the interfaces that will work with the N4000 system.

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&model=N4000&HP_model=&modname=9000+Server+-+N4000&template=secondary&plist_sval=Optional+Interfaces&plist_styp=catagory&dealer_id=&keysel=X&catsel=Optional+Interfaces&ptypsel=SOFT&strsrch=

The part number you posted is not listed.
Sorry to confuse this, let me clarify:

We have both kinds of Gig-E fiber-connected NICs. The latest greatest, A6847A, has been installed in an N4000. The older model, A4926A (I believe), is to be installed in an older V-class unit we have.

While the driver appears to be different between the two, I suspect that I'll run into similar problems on the V-class, which is also on 11.00. So, I'd like to get this all figured out on the N4000.

As far as servers supported, partsurfer has some limitations, among it's many benefits. Check out:

http://www.hp.com/products1/unixserverconnectivity/adapters/ethernet/specifications/gigabit_ethernet_specs.html

The list of supported servers is much longer that the one partsurfer came up with for you.

FP

Based on some reading below, get a Core OS CD, mount it and look for the drivers on that.

What the doc says is that they are supposed to be on the HP-UX Core OS cd. I hope they are on the later 11, but they certainly seem to be on the 11i CD.

Post before my brainstorm.

A possibly useful thread:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x79095ec05a7ad711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

A manual:
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-0701/5187-0701_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-0701/00/00/24-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-0701/00/00/24-toc.html&searchterms=A6847A%7cA4926A%7cDriver&queryid=20030907-063719

The hot link:
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/5187-2783_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/00/00/65-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/00/00/65-toc.html&searchterms=A6847A%7cA4926A%7cDriver&queryid=20030907-063719

driver for the cards.
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/5187-2783_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/00/00/65-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-2783/00/00/65-toc.html&searchterms=A6847A%7cA4926A%7cDriver&queryid=20030907-063719

The A6487A uses igelan
The A4926A uses gelan

According to the link the driver should be installed with 11i.

You'll probably need to go the the kernel and install the drivers in 11.00

sam
kernel
drivers.

Make sure gelan and igelan are IN.

If they are there at all.

Troubleshooting:
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/J5683-90009/J5683-90009_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/J5683-90009/00/00/34-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/J5683-90009/00/00/34-toc.html&searchterms=A6847A%7cA4926A%7cDriver&queryid=20030907-063719

List of part numbers for software:
http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/latest/aps/1202/11xs.htm

Another reference:
http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/latest/aps/1202/11xs.htm

SEP

Hello Felix,
The drivers need to be installed from the, yep, application cd as they are not downloadable from the web. The latest version for J1642AA is B.11.00.11 and for the A6847A, it is B.11.00.07. If you have the latest app cd, you will have these versions of drivers. You will need at the least the following dependencies:

HP-UX 11.0 Quality Pack (March 2002 or later)

PHNE_26250 (or later) -- DLPI patch (must be installed before or along with the Gigabit Ethernet product)

PHCO_25902 (or later) -- SAM support patch

March 2002 Application Release -- support for APA (J4240AA)
Configuration-Specific Patches (for HP-UX 11.0)

PHKL_24729 or later -- required on rp5400 (L class) and rp7400 (N class) systems that have more than 16 gigabytes of memory.

PHSS_25982 or later -- required on any of the following workstations with more than 4 gigabytes of memory:
C3x00 (for example, C3000, C3600)
J5x00 (for example, J5000, J5600)
J7x00 (for example, J7000)

Berlene
