dtksh works great for simple dialog boxes. CDE included dterror.ds which you might find useful. If you know some basic X11/Motif programming it is really easy to put together a wrapper for the Motif dialog box widget, which is basically what xdialog was to begin with. There are some example floating around USENET also. Search on dtksh at http://groups.google.com

S.K. Chan: thx, but i had checked those already before posting. the xmessage is for 10.20 not 11.00, and compiling the source on 11.00 was not good ...xmessage was flaky. the Xdialog stuff did not want to install without some Gtk dependency ...which not to sure about so decided to look elsewhere first.

Chuck: thx, looks interesting but i think xmessage is much simpler for general users plus most users have become familiar with it on our 10.20 boxes.

just surprised that xmessage seems hard to find/get and thus was wondering if it was replaced by something else

Why don't you try to run these 10.20 compiled programs on
hpux 11?

Most of 10.20 (and before) compiled programs runs without any problems on hpux 11.
