Hello,

Well, the K580 has PA-8000 180Mhz CPUs, whereas the PA-8200 has PA-8200 240Mhz CPUs. The K580 can have 6 CPUs though, you might look at that.

It can also have 8Gb memory, compared to the K360 with 4Gb max.

Performance increase is highly dependant on what you run on the machine, though. If you run a very resourceful application, you may find that the upgrade did not yield the expected performance boost.

HTH,
Vince
We might want to upgrade our K360 4-way box to a K580 4-way box.
This is the last upgrade path provided by HP for this machine.

Can anyone guess what performance improvement we should expect from this upgrade ???

Regards
Rainer

There's a performance chart somewhere on the HP site. if I find it again, I'll post it for ya.

I'm guessing you will see about a 40% improvement, but if you want to see real improvement, consider an N-class or RP8400, although that will require going to 11.x

live free or die
harry

Rainer,

I guessed wrong, the performance of a K580 vs K360 is ~68% faster.

http://www.itparade.com/product_library/hp_servers/kclass.shtml

live free or die
harry

I think you should go for a new L-class box with 4 CPU. Because if you upgrade also you have to spend around 20 to 30K. Other way you can get a good L Class box at around 50-60K and you will get some deals also for returning your old K360 box. So the price will be almost same and you will get much better and advanced system. You can go with 440 MHZ CPU which will be much cheaper than 550 MHZ CPU on L Class.

Just an idea.

Sandip

I would also recommend jumping to an L or an N (depending upon projections of future need). But if you are truly set on sticking with the K series I just saw an offer from HP to give you a free K570 if you purchase 16 months of suport for it. You might want to investigate that.

I have taken both paths.

When there was no L's or N's we upgraded a K460 to K580 and added the cpu's to the max.

We got some benifit.

When we went to the K580 to L's and N's were really started to fly. There are several reasons besides just the speed of the CPU's. The internal buses are faster, we also went from 10.20 to 11.00 which allowed us to allocate more memory to our applications. We also didn't have to worry about doing the upgrade from 10.20 to 11.0! Which is very diffucult to do without doing a re-install anyway.

And to top it all off we only had to increase our lease about 4%.

If you can go to the L or N
