thank you all. I realy appreciate your trying to help. I overcome the problem by delete the oracle installation cd's (which was lying on the HD) and copy them all over from the cd's.
apperently the installation was screwed in some sort of way.

and again, thanks for trying to help

Hi, with that message, 9/10 is a too limited kernel parameter.

Check them, there is a list of miimun requirements, swapspace and semaphores.

And other oracle apps running on the same server, expecially if 32bit.

Massimo

Only yesterday I ran oracle9 databases freely on this machine. I didn't touch any of kernel parameters. I can't think of anything I could do to cause this problem. I double checked the kernel parameters and they all look fine (comparing to my other machine with same parameters which works just fine).
so now I don't have a clue where to go.

Hi

The reason could be that "alert_sid.log" could not be written to which is located in the "background_dump_dest". It is defined in init.ora file, please make sure that the directory exists and oracle user can write to this directory.

By default the "background_dump_dest" is located in ???ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/log" unless specified elswhere in the "init<SID>.ora" or the "config<SID>.ora" files.

If oracle cannot write to this file then the "lgwr" process dies, which in turn causes the "pmon" process to die and this will result in ???ORA-00443: background process "PMON" did not start???.

</SID></SID>

I checked alert_sid.log and found no problem with his permission.
also I rebooted the machine so it'll be clean.
when I tried to load an existing database I get this message:
SQL> startup
ORA-00443: background process "SMON" did not start
ORA-27300: OS system dependent operation:fork failed with status: 0
ORA-27301: OS failure message: Error 0
ORA-27302: failure occurred at: skgpspawn5
when I try to shut it down I get this:
SQL> shutdown
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
HP-UX Error: 2: No such file or directory

I also can't install new satabase (smon error).
I checked the kernel parameters and they're all fine, I already run oracle9 databases with the same configuration.
I'm realy desparate on this. Any suggestion would be a great help
