I have been told(not by Bill) that 11i was a marketing decision.

It was based on this.

11.11 is in Europe the date November 11. On that date in 1918 World War I ended. To momorialize, everybody stops working for a while to consider the sacrifice of the soldiers.

So in Europe 11.11 means everything stops.

HP-UX 11.11 in Europe would be the operating system that stops.

Marketing didn't think that was a good idea, so the idea was hatched 11i i for internet. Throw in apache and there you go.

I can't prove any of it, but I've heard the story from a half dozen sources at HP. If HP wishese to dispute this, cool with me, I won't be at HP-World anyway, budget problems.

:-)

SEP.

Why compile it when you can version 2.0.39.05 already compiled from here:

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=B9416AAPA2039&oper=install

It is ready to install in SD format

Yes 11.11 is 11i (for PA-RISC)

There are also 11i for IPF (11.20 and 11.22)

Why they call it like, terminology I guess. We have always called it 11i.

Hello Nag,

I wouldn't struggle with compiling apache, download it from software.hp.com.

And yes HP-UX 11.11 is the same as HP-UX 11i
You know marketing sometimes look for funny names... Since we're like in the 'i' era: Oracle 8i, 9i, internet... intelligent ...:-)

Regards...

Manuel

HPUX is the worst Unix for compiling software. It is best if your going to install apache on HP to use the precompiled bundle..or use Linux/Solaris for your webserver.

The naming conventions for 11.11 (and the mess with versioning such as 11.11 ver 1.5) is due to product marketing decisions. It has made kernel revisions very difficult to navigate in scripts and other kernel-dependent code. Perhaps this will disappear in future revisions and a simple number.number format will return.

you need to post A LOT of info here.
which flags did you use?
which utilities did you use?
which COMPILER ?
which modules ?

by the way.. I agree.. you'd better get a precompiled .depot , after a little more experience you'll compule other programs and you'll see how far beeter is to compile them with ALL the options you need than to get something preconfigured. Easily.
