My windows are just going away for no apparent reason.

If I look in $HOME/.dt/errorlog.old, I get:

t# cat errorlog.old
*** INFORMATION(0): dtwm: PID 4896: Tue Jun 17 11:02:46 2003
Workspace Manager: I/O error on display:: 172.20.5.226:0.0

*** [121]

What does that mean?

Is this a Workstation with a Graphics console or are you using an Xserver on a remote system?
In any event the server, 172.20.5.226, has an IO issue. If this is remote you can suspect the LAN if it is the local console then perhaps a call to HP hardware support is in order.

Please describe the environment, X to a remote. Local workstation etc.
I/O error on display means that your Xserver died or, if using an Xterminal or PC X emulator, that you lost your network connection.

The messages is from dtwm (the window manager) and is not the cause, but a symptom of problems with your Xserver and/or network.

If you are a workstation, then you might see something in /var/dt/Xerrors that has more information about the nature of the failure. If you are on an Xterminal or PC Xserver, I would start verifying that you aren't losing network services from time to time.

1. I am an Exceed user on a Windows/NT desktop connected to the Xserver on an N4000 running HP-UX 11.0.

2. No errors in syslog.

3. dr_dt (good idea) didn't say anything bad.

4. I kind of like the network LAN problem. But why didn't it affect any of my other windows? It only affected the lower left window in my upper left "window pane".

Hi,

Just found a good page, there could be multiple causes.

http://www.hummingbird.com/support/nc/exceed/exceed6x.html

Take a look,

Robert-Jan.

If it is just dtterms (and other terminals) that are going away, then the classic reason is that you left them at a shell prompt and the shell timed out.
Posix-sh and ksh will exit if "TMOUT" seconds goes by while waiting at the shell prompt. (It actually gives a warning at the timeout- "Shell will time out in 60 seconds.")
csh will exit if "autologout" minutes goes by waiting at a shell prompt. (It just prints "auto-logout" and exits without a warning.)

The TMOUT default is 0, which means never. The csh autologout default is 600, which will time out in 10 hours.
