topic HPUX 11i Performance in Operating System - HP-UX

I have just installed HPUX 11i on a B2600, one 500Mhz PA8600 CPU, 512Mb of RAM. The performance is really bad, constantly around 3.5 on the uptime. There is no excessive paging and the CPU is not showing as being hammered in vmstat and there are no blocked process'. Has anyone else seen this and what would you reccomend to try and improve this? Or is this performance normal for 11i?

Thanks all in advance,

Can you check if you got this patch ..
PHKL_24551 which is supersedded by PHKL_25389. On an 11i system, uptime and top will show unusual high load (which doesn't actually reflect the system load), these patches will fix the wrong report by "uptime" or "top".
Other than uptime showing 3.5 load average, are there performance issues? Did you modify any kernel parameters, because if you didn't, you should, because the defaults are LAME. reduce your dbc_max_pct and min to 10 and 5% respectively.

Also, what was the date on your 11i install media? Dec 2001 is most current.

live free or die
harry

Cheers chaps!

I was missing that patch and the installation immediately brought the uptime report under control. I will follow the advice and refresh myself with the kernel parms and make changes where necesary. As a byword the OS cd's were Sept 2001 - is it worth making the effort to reinstall the Dec cd's while I can??

Sam,

Yes, because quite a bit was fixed in Dec 2001. Better to be further into the game than show up after it's over ;-)

live free or die
harry

I have the same problem. Load average 3 no users or jobs running.
Perfview is showing over 60% of the memory being used too. A job ran and the memory did not get release according to Perfview.
I do not have the patches installed.
Thanks for the information.
I wish I had read this before stopping some daemons and rebooting.
Eileen
