Sorry, I hit submit a bit early...

I've rebuilt our V11 server and applied the Sept 2001 General release bundle and these kernal parameters have appeared.

Checking on another V11 machine I found them not listed ( hence the 'notlisted' lines)

What are they?
Can they be got rid of? How?
Could they be the reason for poor IO performance on this machine?

Thanks in advance.
Russ

Russ,

I'd like to suggest that you install Dec 2001 bundled patches, then use the custom patch manager for other outstanding patches. You could do some things to "remove" some of the symbols, but it's my belief that this will just make your system unstable in future upgrades.

When you said you rebuilt your machine with 11.00, did you perform a cold install?

live free or die
harry

You wrote:

> What are they?
> Can they be got rid of? How?
> Could they be the reason for poor IO performance on this machine?

These are new parameters that have been introduced through various patches and releases. No, they cannot be removed and you don't want to remove them. And no, they will not cause any performance issues.

There is no simple solution for I/O performance issues. First, I am assuming that by I/O performance, you are referring to disk I/O specifically and not LAN or tape or terminals, etc.

If so, there are dozens of patches for everything from SCSI and Fibre channel to LVM and VxFS that should be added. If you are recreating your root filesystem, there is a tool that would have made this a trivial task: Ignite/UX, specifically the make_tape_recovery program. You can download this free application from software.hp.com.

As far as patches, since you are reinstalling your system, use your Support Plus CDROM from Dec 2001 or later to update all the Hardware Critical and General Release patches. If you cannot find your SupportPlus CD or do not have a subscription service, download the (hundreds of megs) image from the same site at:

http://www.software.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/

Once all the patches are updated, you can restore from your backup tapes. HOWEVER, do not restore anything from /dev, /usr/lib or from /var/adm/sw (and other directories that may be revision dependent).
