      <description>I tried to login to sqlplus to start up the database, but i was unable to do so...&lt;BR /&gt;this is what i did&lt;BR /&gt;1.login as root&lt;BR /&gt;2. su - oracle&lt;BR /&gt;3. sqplus /nolog&lt;BR /&gt;4. CONNECT SYS/CHANGE_ON_INSTALL AS SYSDBA&lt;BR /&gt;5. give me this error message :&lt;BR /&gt;ERROR:&lt;BR /&gt;ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;So now i need help.....&lt;BR /&gt;...In addition, I have read through this thread...I wasn't able to find svmgrl (server manager) in my system?...can you help me with this also???&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>Try this:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;su - oracle&lt;BR /&gt;sqlplus /&lt;BR /&gt;alter user system identified by foo; &lt;BR /&gt;alter user sys identified by foo;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Also, it's svrmgrl located in $ORACLE_HOME/bin.  My apologies if you typoed in the original message.</description>

      <description>Oops.. I'm sorry.  I thought you had a running database and needed to change the password for system and sys.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If you have an Oracle 8.1 or higher database, you don't need svrmgrl anyway.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;To startup the database:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;# su - oracle&lt;BR /&gt;# # Make sure your ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID are set correctly&lt;BR /&gt;$ sqlplus internal&lt;BR /&gt;(It should say something about "connected to an idle instance"&lt;BR /&gt;SQL&amp;gt; startup&lt;BR /&gt;...&lt;BR /&gt;SQL&amp;gt; exit&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;I'm not sure about oracle 8.0.  I can't remember off the top of my head if sqlplus was able to function like that under that level.  Wouldn't hurt to try.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If it complains the database is running, do a 'shutdown abort' then a startup, but only if you have verified that there are NO database processes running (i.e. 'ps -eaf | grep ora_' returns nothing)</description>
