performance tools

Hi,

What is recommended performance tools that
can collect performance statistic and plot trend graph , set threshold and configure action when an event occur ?
glance and gpm cannot do statistic and measureware don't have graph ?
I don't have perfView , can perfview satisfy this requirement and also I don't want to buy IT/O or Vantage point.

PerfView is quite good.
There is a trial on the Application CD's, so try it!

Yes, PerfView should satisfy your requirement. Another tool I could think of is "sar", it collects performance statistics such on cpu, disk i/o, swap rate, file table usages etc, but it isn't graphical and you had to plot the graphs yourself.

(In fact I am thinking of writting a program to process sar data then post them graphically under a web browser.)

There are two graphing tools I use, BMC Patrol for online performance monitoring, and Metron Athene for long term trending/modelling. Both are not free but will automatically capture/collect the relevant data i.e system metrics, oracle, and filesystems and produce nice charts.

Hi Philip

I am looking at a company that does exactly what you are planning to do.

They can graph collected data in many way, set limits do trend analysis, projection and much more.

They use all the standard unix tools (sar, iostat, vmstat, top, ps etc) to collect data and handle it on a NT/wondoze 2000 machine.
I am very impressed with it and I am looking at a purchase.

Yes perfview will satisfy your requirement. The advantage with this when compared over glance is it pulls out all the system history when required in graphical form.

I have been using and it meets my requirement.
You can use the trial version which comes with the application CD's.
The graphs are decent and not much to configure in perfview.

Hi,

I have been using MRTG to meet my graphing needs. MRTG supports both script inputs as well as MIB OID inputs. The equivalent which uses a more robust backend mysql database is Cricket. You can have daily, weekly, monthly or yearly graphs. Each graph are also tagged with the maximum, average as well as current value of the performance statistic. Threshold values can also be specified. You can also have various data interpretation mechanisms such as gauge or absolute etc. Furthermore, it is web-based and can be downloaded for free.

On the OS level, I am using MRTG to graph CPU utilisation, available memory, available swap, number of concurrent processes, number of concurrent established TCP connections, inbound and outbound network traffic.

On the Oracle level, I am using MRTG to graph the no. of concurrent Oracle users, buffer cache utilisation, library cache utilisation, dictionary cache utilisation, Oracle sqlnet response time (via tnsping results).

On the SAN level, I am using MRTG to monitor the I/O throughput at the brocade silkworm switch ports.

On the network level, I am using MRTG to monitor the network throughput at the CISCO 3524 switches.

On the firewall level, I am using MRTG to monitor the concurrent firewall connections, dropped packets and rejected packets.

On the UPS level, I am using MRTG to monitor the battery time remaining, battery temperature, battery voltage, battery capacity and output load.

MRTG is highly customizable. I integrated a calendar function so that I can easily browse graphs down to a specific date. I have also integrated it with my paging server so that paging alerts are sent when performance threshold values are reached.

If you are looking for an economical solution, MRTG is the one! :)

If you want to integrate OV with MRTG then
have a look at OVMRTG in the MRTG contrib
directory or OverTime (www.netic.com.au).

Hi Steven,

Can you give me the mid value for MRTG to pull the switch port's I/O traffic? I've been trying to following as read from the mib file from Brocade, but seems not right,

1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.12
1.3.6.1.4.1.1588.2.1.1.1.6.2.1.11

Any advice on what value I should use?

Hi

I would recommend you try out a 30 day license on perfview. Very proficient for running performance charts and doing presentations graphically to mgmt.

Excellent tool for historical references.
