      <description>HP 9000 D320 with 11i 32-bit:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;My user reports:&lt;BR /&gt;"The DAT Drive [A3183A DDS-3] is failing with error # 5&lt;BR /&gt;I have tried 2 x tapes &lt;BR /&gt;[DDS-3 &amp;amp; DDS-2]&lt;BR /&gt;&amp;amp; it still fails"&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;1] Am I right in thinking it's an I/O error?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;2] What extra info do I need from the user to diagnose this error?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Mike</description>

      <description>Hi Mike,&lt;BR /&gt;sounds like an i/o error to me...&lt;BR /&gt;Maybe the user will not tell you how he got into this situation. Anyway, it would be a good idea to check if a process is keeping the device busy because of some unfinished operation.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;regards,&lt;BR /&gt;John K.</description>

      <description>What you need to check it &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;errno 5 is I/O error.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Try changing tapes&lt;BR /&gt;|&lt;BR /&gt;|still errno 5&lt;BR /&gt;Try cleaning the drive&lt;BR /&gt;|&lt;BR /&gt;|still errno 5&lt;BR /&gt;|&lt;BR /&gt;|&lt;BR /&gt;MIght be a bad tape drive.&lt;BR /&gt;check /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for any hardware messages&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Revert</description>

      <description>I'd first run dmesg look for lbolts.  If you find one check cables, connections terminators and then boot the system.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If you still have a problem, replace the tape drive.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;ioscan -fnC tape&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Should show the drive as claimed with its device driver.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;SEP</description>

      <description>It sounds like the tape drive does need to be replaced. From the error message, it indicated that the could be a medium (or tape) error. So I would try using another DAT tape and see if it still produces the error. If it does then the drive will need replacement. If you can, give a call to HP so that they can decode the error accurately for you.</description>
