Hi "Forumers"

I think we'll all agree that this forum is one of its kind, where we learn and teach each other in the name of HP-UX. The same apply to assigning points, we need to assign points to those individuals who go out the way in trying to help us through difficult times of solving probelms we encounter in our day-to-day work.
So for this forum to be more interesting we need to assign those points!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you

The points are a nice thing. The are kind of a reward for those who answer the questions.

But more important they are a indicator how helpful a answer was.

Therefore i ask everybody to please assign points to the answers you got.

Hmm ... Sarah, what about this "This member has assigned points to 14 of 17 responses to his/her questions." in your profile ;-)

Regards Stefan

Hi Sarah,

Firstly the forum is a place where System Administrators can gain knowledge and assistance from other System Administrators that may have a wider range of experience on certain topic. Even when we have given a response to a certain question, somebody else may have an alternative solution just as good, where the first person can also learn. Assigning points is not the be all and end all but it is more like a reward for the advice given.

Hi Sara,

As Said before,

Assignig points is a good approach for Evaluating responses, and showing which fully solve problems.

Most important is the contribution of people all over the world to solve problems of somebody which you don't know him ( or her ) !

If Economists world wide could have the same approach, alot of misery could be avoided.

This forum allows us to build a virtual family and hopping we can have a meeting in HP seminars ...
Points are the means for rewarding the responder (and affirmation is a way of showing both courtesy and a way of saying Thanks) and letting them know how their suggestion worked for you. So it helps both the giver and the receiver...now and for future readers. That's why assigning the 8 and above is so important, because future readers know there is a 'solution' at this post. All to many posts, with 10 point answers, have nothing assigned to them.....so future readers may think the answer wasn't 'The Solution' and it was.

Now for Richard, who said he wished he knew who gave him points and if it worked...well you can click check on many of your posting by:
Search <YOUR name=""> and you'll see what you got points on .. or ...
Click on the Forums Page/All forum members (on right below 25 top contrib) and go down to your name and click...it will show you your contributions too. Just remember Richard, your answer may not have been the solution to this persons issue...but it may be the answer someone else who read it needed. Congratulations on your 250....Just 2250 points to go and you get the crown !

Regards,
Rita
</YOUR>

hello-

Just an additional quick comment from the peanut gallery-

I agree with the stuff said about the points (both sides). The important thing is that we are here to help each other, but the points are really nice as well. Personally, I hold off assigning points until the problem is solved (so I have a fair assesement of what worked and what didn't). As far as knowing if we are helping solve the problems (per Richards post), I like to reply when everything is fixed just to let people know what I ended up doing, what was wrong, etc. Not that this is the best way to do it, but I know that you can find a lot of posts when you search for topics with a lot of suggestions, and it is nice to have a summary (in my opinion).

BTW- for anyone from HP reading, it would be nice when searching to have posts with magic answers tagged as such so that we can know ones with successful resolutions

Mark

Hi,

Like always there are two sides of a coin.
I am sure a lot can be said about if its good or bad about assigning points, I remember there was a discussion about this sometime last year, couldn't find that link but here are my thoughts, Ofcourse its good for people to assign points, its sort of appreciating the effors put in by other people.
Like Richard said, even if the users don't assign points, they should atleast indicate (like in a SUMMARY) as to what worked best for them(for future users) and like Mark said some people wait till the end to decide what worked for them to assign points but most of the times it ends up unassigned (because they are working on other problems).
Just my $0.02.

-Regards
I am RU

Have to admit I like the points and the rabbits. Just started in the last couple of months and don't know all that much about HP-UX but my networking /cisco router background seems to give me an edge in the networking category and I've picked up 7 rabbits already this month.

The recognition makes it a lot more fun than the posting I do on the comp.dcom.sys.cisco newsgroup.

Ron

Hello Sarah,

the point system serves two purposes for me:
- it is fun to collect them, and get the so-called "head-jewellry" (as one of our beloved queens coined it ;-) - that's the "reply" part of it
- the rabbit threads attract me, as I usually can learn something there - this for the "lurker" (read: reader) part of it
- and finally as the one posting a problem or question it is both, the nice way of saying thanks, and of telling the repliers and the the others which answer did help

I have to admit that I am not that active any more on the mailing lists "HPADM" (kind of the ancestor of the "hp-ux" forum) and "OVFORUM" (dito for the "management" forums), not because they do not deal points, but because it is so much more fun here at the forums!

Just my $0.002,
Wodisch
PS: Ramesh: I think, I am, too :-) [if it was no pun, ignore this
