We have a 11.0 L-class box that has 5GB of physical mem. However, glance shows a total of 1.29 GB of VM which is 94% used. Does this mean that not all the physical memory is used? Is it used for something else? How would you configure it to use all the mem?

Thanks

Hi,

It sounds as though you may have
your buffer cache size too large.
General consensus is that 10-15%
or around 300Mb total should only
be used for buffer cache.

What are the other figures that
appear on the glance screen for
memory and what does the mem util
row report?

-Michael

OK, I am missing something here.

Here is the line from glance:
Total VM : 236.7mb
Sys Mem : 263.9mb
User Mem: 1.08gb
Phys Mem: 5.00gb
Active VM: 60.5mb
Buf Cache: 2.27gb
Free Mem: 1.39gb
How can total VM be 236MB when I have one process with 276MB of virtual mem and 9 processes using 150+ MB?

What parameters set the buffer cache? This is way higher then 10-15%
Robert,

panic reboot now! Just kidding. You have your buffer cache set to over 50% of your physical memory!

Set your buffer cache min to 5% and your max to no more than 10%.

you only need (usually) a few hundred meg, like < 300mb

live free or die
harry
