Martin,

Thank you for posting that information. I, too, am dismayed by the lack of HP-UX software. Most things that I look at from HP are intended to run on windows. Even the new OmniBack, now named Data Protector 5.1, seems to be a port from windows. The gui for HP-UX doesn't work with ReflectionX, and support advised us to install the user interface for windows. There is a process now running in HP-UX named windu_registryd44 that appears to be a windows registry process ported to HP-UX.

I've been gradually moving my systems to 11i anyway - just because I'm paranoid - but if you look at Patrick's chart, there's a 4 and a half year gap between the end of support for 9.04 and 10.20. Extrapolation puts 11.0 end of support way out there in 2007.

(but I'm still migrating)

Pete

Unless you were in an NDA webinar, I can't imagine that they'd anounce the obsoleting of the OS in 14 months time. That means discontinuing in 2 months time...

It will happen. The newer processors and bigger machines are 11i only, but the schedule seems advanced. I could see a dicontinuance in 14 months and it being obsoleted in 26 months, but who knows.

If you hear anything more, let us know...

John

Here is what I want to know.

When is HP-UX 12 coming?

In general, they have always had two as a minimum number of releases supported. Usually three.

When support drops and you stop getting quality packs and patches, thats a critical time frame, not when they stop selling the OS new.

P

But you realize that that was the OLD HP.

We are now with the NEW HP.

I can see not supporting older versions quicker to reduce the maintenance dollars that HP spends.

It takes fewer people to maintain fewer versions.

The important point is not such the support of the OS but the applications that *run* on the OS. The current release of OpenView Operations (OVO) is 7.10. In the release notes, it says the next version of OVO will *not* support HPUX 11.0.

If I need the functionality of the next release, I'm forced to upgrade the OS regardless of whether HP is supporting 11.0 or not.

:-(
Marty
