Hi there,

I am trying to install the sendmail.8.11.6.security.cr.patch file onto an HP-UX 10.20 system running sendmail 8.11.x. I downloaded the file onto the machine's /tmp directory. While logged onto the system as root I ran the command:

patch -p0 < /tmp/sendmail.8.11.6.security.cr.patch

The result of the above command was the following error message:

Hm... I can't seem to find a patch in there anywhere.

What am I doing wrong or missing? Thanks.

On second thought, it doesn't look like that covers 8.11.6.
Sorry.

From the man pages of patch command:

The message ``Hmm...'' indicates that there is unprocessed text in the patch file and that patch is attempting to intuit whether there is a patch in that text and, if so, what kind of patch it is.

So, I would suggest you to download the file again, check the cksum output and try again.

I was doing some further investigating and there was mention of certain versions of patch, depending on the operating system, that cannot
handle the diffs with the file. HP-UX 10.20 was not mentioned. At the same time, there is GNU patch available as an alternative. I was thinking of downloading the package onto the system in question and using that file as opposed to the one that came with the operating system. Any thoughts?

How are you ftp'ing the patch onto the 10.20 system? Is it coming from a Windows workstation? If so then use binary mode instead of ASCII.

There is a disconnect between Windows ASCII and Unix ASCII in regards to the EOL character which appears as ^M on the HP-UX side. So if you more your patch file and see ^M's at the end of all your lines then the patch file is corrupted and should be ftp'd again using binary mode.
