I need some advice!

We are purchasing an rp2470 server with two 650Mhz PA-8700 CPUs. This will be a 64-bit HP-UX 11.0 server. It will have Oracle 8.1.7 installed, and will be used to run one test and one production databases. Each has a tablespace of about 5GB in 26 datafiles.

Should go with 2GB or 4GB RAM in the server?

What factors should we consider in making the decision on how much RAM we need?

I know that Oracle performance depends on a lot more than RAM. At the moment I am just looking for some guidance in selecting the right hardware. Hopefully many of you out there have experiences with this. This is a time of tight budgets and we can shave off $6,000 by going with 2GB instead of 4.

Thanks in advance!
You would end up with so-so performance if you went with 2GB. Do the 4GB, mostly because Oracle is a PIG and loves to consume resources.

live free or die
harry
You are right that you can save a few thousand, but is the headache really worth it? You could consume more resources, aka your time and users time, which would eat that $6,000 in minutes.

live free or die
harry

If never want to short your memory resources when using oracle. Ask your DBA's how big the Oracle SGA is going to be and save a least 2 gig for the system. 4 gig.

Hi,
Some important factor is
- SGA size
- number of user session.

MY personal view is 2GB could be enough with well managed and configure Oracle MTS will help with memory consumption.
I can run 20 middle size database in rp7400, 4GB Memory. (use MTS).

The important factors you got to consider are as :

1. Is that the only thing you would run on the server fro next 2-3 years

2. Also in case you are planning to run more stuff then it is better to invest few more $$ on RAM then to upgrade later on which will be more expensive speratley.

2.0gb is good enough for the requiermetn but in case you ahve future consideration please do max out the box at the time of purchase itslef.

Manoj Srivastava
I remember that the maximum value for the Oracle SGA used to be 1GB. Did this change now, can one Oracle instance take more than 1GB memory for the SGA?
George

Hi,

As to the limits on the SGA in Oracle, since HPUX 11/64bit and later versions of Oracle (since 8.1.5, I think) the low limits on the SGA have been removed. In the 64bit versions of Oracle it's limited by the OS. Take a look at this generic Oracle limits doc at Metalink if you have an account.

http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showNot?p_id=114019.1&p_font=

Dave
