Good morning,

Running HPUX 11.00 in an NIS environment. CDE Gui comes up to login. however, after i login as root or anyone else the screen goes blank. CDE dissapears. I checked the nsswitch.conf file and the hosts file and everything is fine. This happened after our switch burned up. New switch is in and system was rebooted. that's when it all happpened. Can someone help me please.

We have only seen this happen when the machine cannot get to the home directory of the user. It usually cycles back to the login screen. Is this what ishappening?

My advise would be :

a) remove switch : does problem persist ?

b) edit nsswitch.conf to use only files does problem persist ?

that way you can work out if this is NIS or switch related .....or something else ....

NB try tests for root user only

sounds like a hostname or routing problem ....

ps does the CDE login screen return eventually ?

This also happens when i login as root. I cannot remove the switch because it is required for the whole network. The other 5 HPUX systems are working with nis no logon problems.

OK can you detail what is in : /var/dt/Xerrors, the output from graphinfo wrt the graphics card name/details.

run CDE's diagnostic dr_dt any errors/warnings ?

also RAPSxinitcolormap what is it ? (i suspect this maynot be relevant).

What visual are you running with ? see /etc/X11/X0screens.

attempt a failsafe session -> CDE loginscreen->options ? result ?

It maybe worth your while tusc'ing the dtlogin processes just prior to login .....

Ok.
I ran dt_dt and it told me that there were alot of permision problems. I fixed all of them. It also told me that /usr/dt/app-defaults/C/dtwm is missing. I checked the directory and the file was renamed to dtwm.old. so I did a mv dtwm.old dtwm and rebooted the computer and CDE is now working. Thanks for all of your help.
