Killing Processes

Is there another way to kill processes that won't die...
Other than 'kill -9 PID' or switching the machine off ?

If kill -9 doesn't work (which should ONLY be a LAST resort), then a reboot is the only way until the PROCESS is fixed.

Hi Russ

if kill -9, which is sure kill doesn't work then rebooting the m/c is the only solution to get rid that process

Hi Russ,

processes, which can't be killed with kill -9 should be dead but they still are alive.... therefor, they are called zombies. A reboot is the only way to get rid of them, or you let them stay in RAM if they don't disturb. You can see zombies in the output of "top"- command.
